A Red Kitchen in a Small and Light Scandinavian Apartment

Living in a small home comes with many challenges, but a good home layout can make the tiny home feel spacious and comfortable. This small Scandinavian apartment in the Södermalm area in Stockholm has a floor size of only 37 square meters, but it feels bigger.

The interiors were redesigned by an architect who paired historical elements from the 1920s, like high ceilings, original windows, and wooden floors, with a light, neutral color palette on the walls and a new kitchen and bathroom.

One thing that helps with the spacious feeling of this small apartment is the open-plan hall and kitchen space. The space is divided into two areas: an entry hall with wardrobes and a niche that has been turned into a charming kitchen.

The kitchen was renovated in 2025, featuring deep red cabinets with a marble countertop. The L-shaped kitchen has everything you need and plenty of storage thanks to the upper cabinets along one wall. The fridge is hidden in a small niche on the other side (not pictured).

A window has been fitted in the wall between the bedroom and the kitchen/hall, ensuring the latter space also gets natural light.

An open doorway leads to the living room, which is flooded with light thanks to the large window and offers a lovely view of a green courtyard.

Even though the apartment is small, the living room has plenty of space for a comfortable seating area and a dining table.

The owners opted for a rustic wooden folding table that can be folded out for more seating space during dinner parties.

The bedroom is located next to the living room. The room is painted in a warm beige hue and features antique elements. Again, red color pops have been added in the textiles, creating a uniform color look throughout the apartment.

tiny bathroom

The tiny bathroom was renovated in 2023. As the room is so small, the design is kept simple and fresh with white tiles on the walls and marble tiles on the floor.

Period-style fittings are a nice nod to the building period of the apartment.
