The Archive Home: A Bangalore Family Home Inspired by Nature, Creativity, and Craft

Tucked away in Bangalore, The Archive Home is more than a beautifully designed residence; it is a living chronicle of two lives deeply intertwined with nature, creativity, and quiet passion.

Designed by By The Riverside, the home reflects the philosophy of its founder, Swati Seeran, who believes that the most meaningful spaces emerge when trust leads the design process.

The homeowners are avid wildlife enthusiasts whose lives are shaped by journeys into the wilderness every few months. Their rare and striking wildlife photographs have traveled far, appearing in acclaimed magazines and platforms around the world.

Add to this a husband whose music can fill a room with warmth, and a wife who is his companion in both art and adventure, and the essence of the home begins to unfold. Together with their young child, they envisioned a space that would feel as soulful as the life they lead.

From the moment one steps inside, the home’s material language is unmistakable. Wood and stone dominate the narrative; textured stone walls, distressed finishes, and raw timber details create a palette that feels grounded and timeless.

Live-edge wooden furniture, seemingly sculpted straight from the forest, blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors, bringing the calm of nature into everyday living.

Each space has been carefully curated to feel organic yet refined, allowing the materials to age gracefully with time, much like the stories they hold.

The living room grounds the home with a bold tropical artwork by a celebrated artist, an instant connection for the homeowners, who knew it belonged here the moment they saw it. The piece sets the tone for the entire house: modern yet rooted, expressive yet serene.

The media room is one of the home’s most evocative spaces. Wrapped entirely in a deep, immersive green that flows seamlessly across walls and ceiling, it forms a cocoon-like retreat.

This is where two creative worlds converge: photography and music. Late-night guitar sessions coexist with quiet moments spent revisiting frames captured in the wild, making the room as emotionally rich as it is visually striking.

One of the most cherished corners of the home didn’t originate from a 3D visualization but from instinct and trust. A cozy coffee station by the metal window grill emerged spontaneously during site visits, a long-held wish of the homeowners brought to life in the moment. It stands as a reminder that some of the most meaningful design decisions happen when clients allow ideas to evolve naturally.

In the master bedroom, materiality takes center stage. A wardrobe finished in distressed textures reflects the homeowners’ love for raw, honest surfaces. One corner reveals a stone-clad wall layered with concrete, softly illuminated by a jute pendant light. The result is an earthy, poetic vignette that feels both intimate and grounded.

Reflecting on the journey, Swati Seeran shares: “Designing this home was far from easy. The scheme may appear simple, but every corner needed to reflect their journey and passion.

In moments of differing perspectives, the homeowners reminded me of the trust they had placed in By The Riverside, a trust that became the true foundation of our collaboration. Their generosity of spirit left a deep mark on us. Even today, their words of appreciation echo back to us, reminders of why we do what we do.”
