Reclaimed Materials in a Small Victorian Garden Apartment
In south-east London, this apartment occupies the ground floor of a 19th-century townhouse, built during a period of growth in Penge.
The rear extension opens directly onto the garden, where roses, tulips, and dahlias fill the space behind this small apartment; inside, soft colors and reclaimed materials give the Victorian home a relaxed, cohesive feel.

The front door opens directly into the apartment’s central room. This space is used as a cozy sitting room, pairing reclaimed Victorian pine floorboards with an apricot lime-plastered former fireplace.

Bookshelves fill the alcoves on either side, rising above traditional radiator covers.

From the central living room, the room flows into the rear extension, where a navy-blue Shaker kitchen has tick timber worktops, integrated appliances, and a backsplash of hand-painted Nina Campbell tiles.

Beyond the kitchen is a second sitting area with folding doors spanning almost the full width of the wall. When opened, the room becomes part of the garden.

An armchair with a botanical fabric and a green sofa link the interior with the flowers and greenery in the garden.

The garden offers several places to spend time outdoors. An Egyptian limestone terrace beside the extension has room for a dining table and potted plants.

Beyond it, flower beds run along both sides of the lawn, and a path of tumbled sandstone cobbles leads to a timber-lined studio at the far end.

Currently used as a music room, the studio could also serve as a workspace overlooking the planting. Its floor adds one final reclaimed detail: Canadian maple boards salvaged from a basketball court and laid in a playful pattern.

The bedroom is located at the front of the plan, where a three-part bay window brings in plenty of light. Its soft pink limewashed walls and reclaimed floorboards continue the apartment’s gentle mix of color and texture.

Open storage fits neatly into the two alcoves, while vintage dressers add additional storage. The exposed wooden door is also a beautiful element.

The small bathroom features deep green wall tiles, a star-patterned floor tile, a bath with an overhead shower, and a square basin on a timber vanity.

The apartment was listed for sale at Inigo.
