A Beautiful Artist Retreat Designed by Architect Bartolomeu Costa Cabral
Nestled far from the bustle of city life, this retreat was custom-designed for two artists by the renowned modernist architect Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, a pivotal figure in the evolution of Portuguese architecture.
Conceived as both a family residence and a creative workspace, the property offers an unparalleled environment for disconnecting from the outside world. Spread across 9 hectares of untouched nature, the Artist Retreat is a haven of tranquillity, with sweeping vistas in every direction and total privacy—a rare treasure for those immersed in their craft.
“Architecture must communicate with people; it should be a companion that brings meaning to the spaces it creates,” said Bartolomeu Costa Cabral. His ethos is fully embodied in this retreat, where his mastery of natural light, local materials, and functional design creates a profound harmony between the building and its surroundings.
Constructed using rammed earth, a traditional technique from southern Portugal, the house appears to blend seamlessly into the landscape, as if it has always been part of it.
The main house includes a master suite and a family wing with additional bedrooms; all centered around a well-equipped kitchen designed for shared meals. The property is divided into two distinct structures, each with its own entrance, yet connected by a central patio that serves as a shaded outdoor dining area.
The second building was specifically tailored to the artists’ needs, housing their studios and workspaces. It features a ceramics atelier, a study, a nap room, and a large warehouse space perfect for uninterrupted creative endeavors.
About the owners
Fifteen years ago, a couple of Portuguese artists built this home, where they immersed themselves in their creative passions. During their time here, they dedicated themselves to ceramics, sculpture, writing, and visual arts, creating a space that became both a sanctuary and an inspiration for their artistic endeavors.
“We built our dream house on a property in Lower Alentejo, near Beja, in one of the most well-preserved areas of this region of Portugal. Sparsely populated, it is characterized by the iconic Montado landscape of cork trees and gently rolling hills. On clear nights, the view of the starry sky is unparalleled.
The house was conceived as a collaborative work of art. The project was designed by architect Bartolomeu Costa Cabral, known for his modernist approach and his thoughtful consideration of both the local environment and the quality of life his spaces offer. His signature style is evident in the way the architecture responds to natural light, the careful selection of materials, and the intelligent functionality and flow of the spaces.
The interior design was our own work, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere—a sophisticated blend of simplicity, with vintage furniture and objects, carefully chosen textiles, and works of art, both our own and those of friends and fellow artists.”
The house is listed at Fantastic Frank Lisbon.
