A Colorful Danish-Inspired Mid-Century Family Home in London
In a quiet residential area in Barnet, North London, stands this magnificent mid-century house where bright colors, patterns, and finishes create a fun and vibrant family home.
The house was built in the 1960s, and has been wonderfully reimagined, a collaboration between the owners and Studio Astrain Scheldt, inspired by Danish summer houses. The colorful interiors are the work of Bice & Birch, the newly launched interior design firm by the home’s owner.

The kitchen and dining room are located at the back of the house, overlooking the garden.

The colorful U-shaped kitchen is designed by Pluck, featuring a red and white checkerboard backsplash, and open and glass-fronted cabinets on one side, and green lower cabinets.

Salmon pink open cabinets facing the dining area provide extra storage, as well as the floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinets on the right, featuring sunny yellow doors.

Almost the entire ground floor features a cheerful yellow terrazzo floor.

The dining area is placed in front of a large picture window facing the garden. The Scandinavian-style dining set is lighted by the HAY Bonbon shade in the ‘ice cream’ color.

The wall facing a cozy sitting area is decorated with the Josef Frank Eldblomman wallpaper.

The sitting room features sunny yellow walls and a light green floor.

An arched doorway leads to a cozy television room painted in light blue and featuring a blue sofa.

The main sitting room is semi-open-plan with the dining area and the kitchen. The walls are painted in a soft pink shade paired with green joinery and yellow terrazzo floor tiles.

The hall is decorated in the light blue Scallops wallpaper from Ottoline.

The ground floor is completed with a charming home office, featuring the same yellow terrazzo floor and a green desk under the window facing the garden.

A green-painted staircase leads to the first floor.

The first floor landing is decorated in the same palette as the ground floor hall, with pink paneling and Ottoline wallpaper.

The master bedroom is a calm space with built-in wardrobes with arched doors (a recurrent theme in this home) and soft pink walls.

The master bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom with red and white checkerboard tiling (like the kitchen backsplash) and the same yellow terrazzo tiles.

Each bedroom (four in total) has its own color scheme. One of the children’s rooms is decorated with a dotted yellow wallpaper.

Two children’s rooms are connected, but privacy is added through a red striped curtain.

The family bathroom features the same style as the master suite bathroom, only this time using a green and white checker pattern.

The arched doors in the dining room open onto a paved outdoor patio bordered by scented lavender, hydrangeas, and salvia hot lips.

The house is listed for £1,250,000 at The Modern House.
