Contemporary Open-Plan Living Spaces in an English Victorian House
This grand five-bedroom Victorian house stands on the leafy outskirts of the English university town of Oxford. The 3,670 sq ft house has been carefully renovated by its current owners, creating bright, contemporary interior spaces behind a classic Victorian facade.
Grand open-plan living spaces define the house’s ground floor. On one side, there is a large kitchen, dining, and sitting room with double-height ceilings. While on the other side of the house, you can find another open-plan space with additional seating and a home library.

We’re starting the tour in the grand open-plan kitchen, dining room, and lounge, which is the heart of the home. The room is clearly divided into three zones: a sitting area on the left, a kitchen in the back, and a dining area on the right.

The sitting area is set beneath a double-height glass-panelled roof and features a deep blue accent wall and green and orange velvet sofas.

The contemporary kitchen features olive green cabinets paired with gold fittings and a marble-topped island with bar seating.

Floor-to-ceiling glazed doors give access to the landscaped garden, offering a wonderful indoor/outdoor living experience.

The dining room with a huge farmhouse-style table and shaker chairs is defined by the same deep blue color on the walls as in the lounge.

Entry to the house is via the open-plan living spaces on the other side of the house. There is a closed-off library room/office on the right side of the living room, while the other space is open-plan, featuring bay windows and an eggshell-blue hue on the walls.

The library room is separated into two areas by a fireplace in the center of the room.

In the snug, the built-in cabinets are painted in a bright red shade for a nice color pop.

The house has two staircases, one by the front door, and the second, curved staircase can be found in the kitchen.

Both staircases end up on the first floor landing that runs the entire length of the house.

The house has five bedrooms, two of which have an en-suite bathroom, and there is also a large family bathroom.

All bedrooms are painted in soft pink or green hues.

The large family bathroom is decorated in the same palette as the en-suite bathrooms. Soft pink walls are paired with blue-green tilework and black windowframes.

There is a garden on two sides of the house. Via the kitchen, you enter the landscaped garden with multiple seating areas and a covered deck for dining and lounging.

The west garden is laid out to lawn and bordered with a variety of roses, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
The house was listed for £2,400,000 at The Modern House.
