A Muted Color Palette and Original Details in a Victorian Terrace House
This three-bedroom home is located in a typical Victorian terrace house in the Sydenham Hill Conservation Area in London. The houses were built in the 1860s by a local industrialist in response to the development of the area after the Great Exhibition in 1851.
The row of Victorian houses are defined by their stock-brick façades and stucco-dressed windows. And inside, the historical character has been preserved and complemented with carefully selected contemporary additions, as well as a carefully selected color palette of muted, neutral hues.

The house is divided over three floors with entrances on the lower ground floor and the ground floor. The lower ground floor is home to an open-plan living space, washed in Farrow & Ball’s “Light Grey,” which is paired with light-toned wooden floorboards and exposed concrete.

The kitchen is designed with stylish white cabinets paired with oak countertops and a shelf above the workspace. The ceiling on this floor is pretty low, so a shelf instead of cabinets gives a sense of space.
A kitchen island sits at the center of the space, crowned by two Larosae lampshades by Alvaro Siza.

The other half of the room is designed as a dining space with two built-in cabinets on the right, adding plenty of storage, while a curtain hides the entry storage.

A Saarinen marble-topped dining table is paired with vintage leather Matteo Grassi chairs.

A green staircase decorated with William Morris’ Willow Bough wallpaper leads you to the ground floor.

The ground floor is home to a home office and a bedroom, separated by double wooden doors and featuring the original wooden floorboards.

The bedroom features half-shuttered sash windows and built-in wardrobes. The walls, ceiling, and wardrobes are painted in “Old White” by Farrow & Ball.

The top floor is home to the master bedroom and the bathroom. This floor also features the original wooden floorboards.

The master bedroom, with two large sash windows, is color-drenched in “Mouses Back” by Farrow & Ball.

The large bathroom features rustic wooden floorboards and a freestanding bath with marble tiles and Burlington fittings.

A double Duravit sink is fitted on a midcentury cabinet and has a marble top, while the mirror is equipped with Flos Glow Ball sconces.

The kitchen door opens to a paved garden surrounded by timber screening and a backdrop of established planting like culinary herbs, perennials, and a potted fig tree.

The ground floor exterior is painted in an ochre yellow shade, matching the kitchen shelves.

The house was listed for £825.000 at Inigo.
