A Natural Color Palette in a Swedish 1940s Apartment
On the top floor of a 1940s building in Stockholm lies this charming one-bedroom apartment with a natural color palette of warm beige, green, and pink shades. The 42-square-meter apartment has an efficient layout, with a spacious living room and kitchen.
Apartment buildings built in the middle of the previous century often had wonderfully large windows, and this one is no exception. Not many other period features have been preserved, but the owner has included midcentury furniture in the decor.
The living room is spacious and features a sand-beige wall color, which, combined with the oak parquet floor, creates a soft, warm atmosphere.
The wall behind the sofa is decorated with a large round mirror that reflects light from the window and the balcony door, and colorful artwork.
The room opens to a balcony, and thanks to the apartment’s high location, it is wonderfully private and a great extension of the living space.
The door between the living room and the bedroom has been removed; instead, an ochre-yellow velvet curtain can be drawn for privacy. It adds a warm color accent to the space as well as texture.
The bedroom is painted in a forest green shade, which harmonizes beautifully with the ochre-yellow curtains. The room is just wide enough for a double bed, and one wall is fitted with wardrobes with sliding doors to save space.
The kitchen is a spacious, inviting space with subtle hints of the apartment’s midcentury building period. The IKEA cabinets are fitted with light gray doors and paired with an oak countertop and classic white backsplash tiles.
These square white backsplash tiles and a checkerboard floor are typical features in a midcentury Swedish kitchen.
The walls are painted in a soft pink hue and the two windows overlook the forest next to the building.
The room is big enough for a generous dining table. It now features a round table, but with benches fitted against the walls, you can create an even bigger dining nook.
The gray and white checkered linoleum floor continues into the hallway, where it is paired with the Spring Bells wallpaper from Svenskt Tenn.
