Pink Tones in A Renovated Queen’s Park Victorian House

On a leafy corner in Queen’s Park, this end-of-terrace Victorian house has been gently brought back to life following a sensitive renovation by Alexander Martin Architects.

Once almost swallowed by ivy and wild greenery, the home now wears its past beautifully, with a design language that draws directly from the natural overgrowth that once enveloped it.

Earthy tones, softened lines, and a sense of quiet nostalgia run throughout, creating interiors that feel both considered and deeply welcoming.

Throughout the house, the material and colour palette have been meticulously considered, with each room telling its own story. A sandy neutral forms the backbone, allowing deeper, richer tones to come forward without overwhelming the space.

Sustainability played a central role in the transformation. Original red bricks were carefully salvaged and reused in the new rear extension, reconfigured to create a contemporary yet respectful finish that nods to the building’s heritage while firmly placing it in the present.

Rather than the traditional front entrance, access is via the side of the plot, opening into an expansive hallway that immediately sets the tone. Handcrafted dark-oak double doors, etched with a geometric motif inspired by 1960s Italian interiors, lead through to the main living spaces.

Beyond, timber floorboards run underfoot, guiding the eye through three distinct zones: a formal sitting room, a sunken TV and family area, and a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space at the rear.

The living room centres around a wood-burning stove, bringing warmth and intimacy, while the lowered family area creates a relaxed retreat before transitioning into the home’s modern extension.

Here, the architects have cleverly expanded the footprint by extending the side returns on both sides, resulting in an exceptionally wide, light-filled kitchen.

In the kitchen, underfloor-heated tiled floors are paired with pale worktops and softly textured wall tiles. At the same time, bespoke cabinetry conceals a brass boiling-water tap, a statement range cooker, and a discreetly positioned pantry.

Thanks to the south-facing orientation and generous glazing, the kitchen and dining area are bathed in natural light throughout the day.

Outside, the garden has been designed as an extension of the home’s narrative. Conceived to evoke the romance of an archaeological ruin, the space combines weathered stone with lush evergreen planting. The contrast between rugged textures and soft greenery creates a quietly dramatic backdrop to the interiors beyond.
