A Warm 1912 Craftsman Kitchen Reimagined by Melissa Hardwick

Set within a 1912 Craftsman house in Vancouver, this kitchen renovation by Melissa Hardwick is designed within the home’s original footprint, reimaging the space with warm, traditional, and thoughtful details as though it has always belonged to the historic house.

Thanks to smart changes, uncovered historical elements, and a layout that allows for a cozy dining nook, this kitchen is now the heart of the home. With a design that is rich in character, layered in detail, and influenced by English designs, Melissa created a space that feels original to the home yet reimagined for modern living.

Rather than altering the footprint, the renovation focused on architectural refinement. The basement stairs were relocated to improve flow, a dropped ceiling was removed to restore volume, and a sloping floor was reinforced for long-term integrity.

Along the way, an original brick chimney was uncovered, and a larger window was introduced to draw natural light deeper into the space. Each decision respected the home’s bones while subtly elevating how the kitchen functions day to day.

During the renovation work, this original brick chimney with a rare angled design was uncovered. Instead of hiding it, the brick chimney became a feature element in the kitchen.

At the heart of the room is a custom, built-in banquette, designed to solve the home’s lack of a dedicated dining area. More than a practical solution, it brings warmth, storage, and architectural presence to the kitchen.

The banquette is set against newly installed panelled millwork, carefully replicated from the home’s front parlour, creating a sense of continuity across spaces.

Above, the classic Fruit wallpaper (in the color Wine/Manilla) by William Morris adds pattern and heritage character, while soft pendant lighting (from Jake Arnold’s Crate & Barrel collection) introduces an intimate evening glow.

The palette leans toward rich, timeless tones: deep burgundy cabinetry, warm wood tones, and burnished brass details combine to create a modern-traditional aesthetic that feels both grounded and enduring.
