A Restored Victorian Worker’s Cottage with a Charming Garden in York
Tucked inside York’s medieval city walls, this charming Victorian railway worker’s cottage has been thoughtfully restored into a warm, characterful home. With three bedrooms, a beautifully open-plan kitchen, living and dining area, and a pair of enchanting gardens, it offers both historic charm and contemporary comfort.
Built in the 1870s, the cottage has been carefully revived by its current owners, who undertook much of the restoration themselves. Their craftsmanship is most evident in the carpentry: the staircase balustrade has been extended into the newly formed top floor, while the original wooden sash windows have been painstakingly reconstructed.
Throughout the house, a calm palette of natural materials such as limed oak, copper, and clay reinstates lost period details and gently enhances those that remain. New hearths align with the recently levelled floors, reinforcing the sense of continuity between old and new.

The kitchen draws inspiration from 20th-century Arts and Crafts furniture and the owner’s fondness for Heal’s cabinetry, with slate worktops fashioned from a reclaimed pool table and a richly patinated copper splashback.

The side return extension accommodates a kitchen table beneath a pitched, tongue-and-groove ceiling, illuminated by skylights. Underfoot, reclaimed flagstones sit alongside an original herringbone brick floor.

Glazed doors open directly onto the garden, creating a wonderful sense of indoor/outdoor living.

The rear garden is enclosed by striking Victorian red-brick walls. In warmer months, it becomes an extension of the kitchen, with space for outdoor dining and entertaining. A gate at the far end opens onto a quiet back lane, adding both charm and convenience.

An original cast-iron stove and wash copper nod to the home’s working past.

Between the kitchen and the front of the house lies a slightly raised dining room, now used as a relaxed living area. There is a guest WC with integrated utility storage that sits neatly to one side.

At the front, the sitting room enjoys soft natural light from a large bay window. Original picture rails, cornicing, and a ceiling rose remain, complemented by timber floorboards and a wood-burning stove set within a blue-painted surround.

The hallway is laid with classic checkerboard tiles.

On the first floor lie two bedrooms and a bathroom. The master bedroom is located at the front of the house, featuring two large windows and a cream-colored fireplace.

The smaller bedroom is used as a children’s room, featuring dark-painted wooden floorboards and another ornate fireplace.

The bathroom is truly magnificent! Encaustic Spanish tiles and reclaimed quarry tiles frame an open shower and freestanding bathtub, while an antique cupboard with a marble top has been repurposed as a washstand. A newly hand-built window looks out towards the city walls.

The top floor hides a serene bedroom space with skylights overlooking York’s rooftops and a white-painted brick feature wall.

The front garden is private and lush with flowering plants and a small tree.

The house is listed for £550.000 at Inigo.
