A Timeless Basement deVOL Kitchen in Butter-Yellow and Purple-Brown
From the quiet, leafy streets of Camberwell, this 1830s Georgian townhouse looks every bit the picture of historic charm. Its elegant proportions and tall sash windows whisper of centuries past, but it’s the glimpse through a big arched window just below street level that hints at the real story within.
Down in the basement, exactly where the original kitchen would have been, lies a serene and perfectly balanced space. Designed with deVOL’s Classic English cupboards, it’s a room where calm, neutral tones set the mood.

The owners chose a soft, muted yellow and paired it with a deeper, almost purple-brown shade, a pairing that brings to mind the kitchens of old townhouses, where every color told a story of function and tradition.
Wide oak boards underfoot and cool, honed Carrara marble on the worktops create a gentle contrast, marrying earthy warmth with quiet elegance.

Despite its understated palette, this kitchen is big on practicality. Along one wall, an L-shaped run holds the cooker and sink in a neat, unfussy arrangement.
Opposite, a tall larder conceals the fridge and freezer, while a generous freestanding prep table anchors the room. This piece, with its uniform bank of drawers, offers not just storage, but also a sense of order and symmetry that gives it a bespoke, tailored feel.

The details elevate this kitchen from beautiful to unforgettable. Wispy linen café curtains frame the window, softening the light. An Heirloom Gaselier Light hangs over the prep table like a piece of jewellery.

Mini Creamware Wall Lights, aged brass taps, and hanging rails provide moments of vintage charm, while a pair of Creedy Stools offers a place to perch and chat over morning coffee.

Tucked to one side, the walk-in pantry is a small triumph of color and texture. Here, a baked browny red coats tongue-and-groove panelling and slim open shelves, while Shaker-style base cupboards, some skirted, some closed, are topped with honed black granite.
It’s a space that feels at once utilitarian and deeply inviting, perfect for storing preserves, baking essentials, and treasured ceramics.

In this Camberwell home, the balance between history and modern living has been struck with rare precision, resulting in a space that feels as timeless as the townhouse that holds it. It’s another beautiful project by deVOL Kitchens, and you can see more of their work by clicking here.
