IKEA KOMPISHÄNG: 11 Affordable, Multifunctional, and Moveable Pieces

IKEA has released the new KOMPISHÄNG collection designed specifically for young adults who move often and settle in quickly. KOMPISHÄNG features 11 new products that are affordable, multifunctional, and movable at a moment’s notice.

For a growing generation of young adults, moving is no longer a one-off life event but a repeating rhythm. Each new season may bring a new apartment, neighborhood or city, shaped by rental housing, career mobility, and urban living.

Developed around this reality, the pieces in the KOMPISHÄNG collection are made from solid pine, powder-coated steel, and durable canvas, with items designed to be packed, carried, and set up again, performing just as well in a shared flat as in a studio apartment or a first long-term home.

This collection was not only shaped in a design studio but also through visits to people’s homes. IKEA spent time with young adults aged 20-28 living in central London to understand how they actually live.

Across these visits, the same patterns emerged: improvised storage, well-worn moving boxes repurposed as furniture, and a small number of carefully chosen objects carried from one rental to the next.

These visits to young people’s homes reflected a shared way of thinking. Every purchase was weighed against the next move: it had to be easy to carry, last longer than one home, and look good in a small space.

These were not isolated opinions but common priorities that became the design mandate for KOMPISHÄNG.

“Even if you move often, you don’t want your home to feel temporary. We wanted the collection to be portable but still have a permanent look; people should feel settled and considered,” says product developer Dora Ding.

Designed by the Generation it Serves

To make sure the collection would reflect reality, the design team made an early decision: the people creating it should be the people it was created for.

Through IKEA’s twice-yearly internship program for design graduates in Älmhult, two recent industrial design graduates, both in their mid-twenties, were embedded in the project from the very first workshop in London, before a single sketch had been drawn.

Over a five-month internship, they ideated, tested, and proposed six of the products. Their most significant early intervention was pushing back against a more colorful direction, arguing that in small spaces, a calmer visual language (such as natural pine, soft beige, measured accents of red and green) creates room rather than noise.

A Bed You Can Carry on Your Back

The KOMPISHÄNG mattress/pouffe has adjustable shoulder straps, making it easy to carry on your back while keeping your hands free for take-out.

The pocket spring mattress offers a comfortable sleeping alternative to sofas and is perfect for when family and friends visit. When no longer needed as a bed, simply fold the mattress back into the washable canvas cover to create an extra seat in the living room.

A Table That Holds Your Hand Throughout the Move

The KOMPISHÄNG desk is a versatile table suitable for everything from working to socializing. It required no assembly and, with just two pulls and two clicks, it goes from flat to finished.

The pine top and green metal frame give it a warm and calm expression designed to stand the test of time. And with a handle under the tabletop, it’s made to be moved.

The Plant Protector

Plants are great for making a new place feel like home. However, moving them can prove challenging. During a home visit, designer Wiebke Braasch, was inspired by a young plant lover who shared her stress about not being able to bring her cherished plants safely to her new place.

From that need came an idea about a plant pot that could hold more than just the plant. The KOMPISHÄNG plant pot in jute features a built-in cover that can be rolled out to protect the plant during a move.

With large handles, the pot can be carried to its new home without the need for extra packaging. Once the plant is settled, the cover is simply tucked away and hidden inside an inner compartment in the pot.

From Shoulder Table to Side Table in Seconds

The construction of the KOMPISHÄNG side table allows it to fold almost completely flat, making it easy to fit anywhere. The circles formed by the red metal base and the pine wood top create a satisfying symmetrical silhouette that will stand out, whether you are moving, storing, or displaying it.

“This table isn’t just a temporary solution. It’s designed to accompany life’s transitions, equally at home in a first apartment, a family house, or even a retirement space,” says designer David Wahl.

A Seat for Every Friend

Small spaces call for smart solutions. When a room needs to transform from bedroom to living room on a daily basis or easily go from hosting ten people to just one, flexible furniture is key.

When not needed as extra seating, the two KOMPISHÄNG stools fit together like a puzzle and transform into practical storage.

“A stool is a very versatile object in itself. I wanted to add a feature without taking away from its simplistic expression,” says designer Lukas Albrektsson.

Comfort Wherever You Go

Bare walls, cold floors, and an empty fridge. The first night in a new place can be anything but aspiring. The KOMPISHÄNG back cushion was designed to soften every corner and, with a handle, be easy to move around the home.

The triangular cushion lets you lean against the wall or turn a sofa into a bed. Fold down the top cushion for extra neck support.

For Shelfless Readers

Stacks on the floor, piled in the window, or scattered on the table. When you don’t own a bookshelf, books tend to end up a bit all over the place.

With the KOMPISHÄNG portable bookend, your books can travel in style and be safely moved around the home without gathering dust. In red metal with smart handles, it’s the perfect addition for a traveling book collection.

Surrounded by Friends and Family

These mirrors reflect who you are in more ways than one. Since it’s difficult to attach things to the walls of a rental, designer Constance Thiessoz wanted to give room for personality when she created the KOMPISHÄNG mirrors.

By adding slots to the mirror frames, she made space for photos, ticket stubs, and other mementos, making it easier for first-time homers to surround themselves with the things they care about most.

“It wanted the frame to be all wood without adding extra materials. At first glance, it looks simple and ordinary, but by adding your own photos around the frame, every mirror becomes unique,” says designer Constance Thiessoz.

From Floor Space to Door Space

The two KOMPISHÄNG hangers for doors can create storage out of thin air. One is made of washable canvas fabric with hooks for jackets and pockets for everyday items, and attaches securely to the back of the door using straps instead of nails or screws.

For those in need of extra hooks, the door hanger in pine features 12 of them and happily holds both caps and necklaces.

The availability of the KOMPISHÄNG collection depends on your location. In the US, it will be available exclusively in stores from July 31 through August 14, ahead of its online release on August 15.
