Period Features and a Harmonious Color Palette in an 1890s Stockholm Apartment
On the ground floor of a late 19th-century apartment building next to the cozy Mariatorget (Maria Square) in the trendy Södermalm area in Stockholm, this charming one-bedroom apartment has been nicely renovated in recent years.
The 60-square-meter apartment features many original details from the 1890s, such as a 3.3-meter ceiling height, rooms in a row facing the courtyard, wooden floors, stucco, mirrored doors, and deep window niches. All these elements add character to this lovely home.

All rooms are laid out in a row, with the living room as the apartment’s central heart. Every room features the original white-stained wooden floors, paired with a gentle, harmonious color scheme added in recent years.

The living room features two large windows in a row, bringing in plenty of natural light despite its ground-floor location.

In the corner of the room stands the original fireplace (a kakelugn), decorated with floral accents in pastel colors. This fireplace is one of the few remaining original fireplaces in this building.

The living room walls are painted a light beige (“Kokos” by Jotun) that pairs nicely with the wooden floorboards and lets the white-painted stucco shine.

I love the little bookshelves detail above and next to the doorway. A clever way to use those extra high ceilings for storage space.

The kitchen is located on one side of the living room and can be accessed via the entrance hall.

A cozy breakfast nook is fitted below the large window, featuring a small marble-topped bistro table and an antique wooden bench.

The apartment has its own patio terrace enclosed by a wrought-iron fence. It is located right outside the kitchen, making entertaining extra easy.

The kitchen was recently renovated, with new IKEA cabinets paired with Picky Living doors and a thin composite worktop.

The kitchen walls are painted in a light beige-gray (“Shadow White” by Farrow & Ball).

The bedroom is located on the other side of the living room. The room is painted in a soft blue color, adding a calming atmosphere to the sleeping space.

Built-in wardrobes with sliding doors provide plenty of storage space.

The large window with deep niche is perfect for decorating or storage, but you can also turn it into a window seat.

The hall is also painted in a soft blue color, including the door leading to the bathroom.

The bathroom is tiny but stylishly renovated by the previous owner, featuring marble tiles, a shower, and a sink with a cabinet.

Every time I see one of these older Swedish apartment buildings, I am in awe of the communal spaces. Just look at this communal hallway! The detailing is simply magnificent.
