A 1920s Villa Pairs Modern Design and Period Features
On a leafy corner plot in Sweden lies this charming 1920s villa where modern additions pair beautifully with the period details from the beginning of the century. The entire house was renovated in 2024, adding a color palette made with Jotun paints that highlight the original joinery.
The light-filled spaces feel modern and characterful at the same time. An open-plan living space on the ground floor has a large bay window. And on the upper floor is another sitting room with a charming reading niche, as well as four bedrooms.

The hall opens into the ground floor living area with a large bay window, original wooden floorboards, and the original fireplace. The walls are painted in Jotun’s Coconut, creating a light atmosphere in the room.
The room features a beautiful fireplace in Art Nouveau style featuring a dark green veined marble mantelpiece.
The room has been opened up, creating a wonderfully social living space with a large dining table between the sitting area and the kitchen.
The kitchen is a wonderful modern addition to the historic home. Floor-to-ceiling ash veneer cabinets offer plenty of storage space.
The ash veneer cabinets are paired with Dekton, a composite stone countertop that is resistant to stains, scratches, and heat from hot frying pans and cooking pots.
Behind a mirrored sliding door – a reused original door from the house – hides a cozy room with light from windows in two directions.
The small room is now the master bedroom and features a small walk-in closet. The walls are painted in Jotun’s earthy pink color “Thoughtful”.
On the ground floor lies also a new bathroom with a built-in bathtub and built-in fixtures in brushed nickel from Tapwell, a towel rail from Nordhem, a sink from Catalano, a wall-mounted toilet from Duravit, and a custom-built storage cabinet in a niche.
The walls and floor are covered with a light beige terrazzo tile.
A reddish-brown staircase leads to the first floor of the home.
The upstairs living room is a cozy and more private area where the walls are painted in Jotun’s color, “Subtle Green”.
An old built-in wardrobe has been converted into a sleeping alcove with storage under the bed and partially preserved shelving from the 1920s.
The room also opens into a spacious roof terrace.
From the living room, an anteroom with two double wardrobes leads into two cozy bedrooms with walls painted in Jotun’s “Indi Pink.”
A larger bedroom on the first floor makes use of the slanted ceiling by adding shelves. The walls are painted in Jotun’s “Coconut.”
In the hall, the walls are painted in Jotun’s color, “White Tea,” and the floor is covered with limestone-like granite ceramic tiles from Bricmate.
