A Beautiful Historic Swedish Country House with Wallpapers
Sometimes, I see a house from the outside and immediately know that it is a truly unique and spectacular home. I’ve always dreamed of moving to Sweden and have a picture in my head of what that home should look like, and this 19th-century cottage comes pretty close to my imagination.
This beautiful Swedish villa is located in an idyllic and leafy neighborhood and was built at the turn of the last century by Johan Stolt. The same family lived in this house for generations since it was built until the current owner moved in twenty years ago.
When the house was sold by Elvy, the great-granddaughter of the house’s builder Johan Stolt, it wasn’t in good shape, but the new owners promised that they would take care of the old family house.
A careful restoration was undertaken based on old pictures and stories. Everything that could be preserved was supplemented with new joinery using the old ones as a model. Other things, such as the fire-resistant fireplaces, were reused from contemporary houses.Â
The house breathes history, and all contemporary additions suit the historic bones perfectly. During the renovation, a new kitchen and bathroom were added. Contemporary wallpaper has been put up, and all the interior joinery has been painted with linseed oil paint.
From the veranda, a glazed front door opens into the entrance hall. The walls are covered with tongue and groove paneling painted in a soft pink shade, and there is plenty of storage space.
The hall leads directly into the kitchen. The farmhouse-style kitchen features cabinets and a serving cabinet built in an old-fashioned style with built-in doors and drawers. All the contemporary appliances are in a retro design.
An old wood-burning stove has been installed in the work area, and the countertops are made of Cascais marble.
The chest panels are painted in the same calm shade as the kitchen cabinets and topped with a rose-patterned wallpaper from Lim & Handtryck.
The kitchen and living room are connected with a charming glass garden room that is now used as a dining room. It is a wonderful room with windows on three sides overlooking the garden as well as glazed doors leading to the garden.
The floor is covered with handmade floor tiles from Marrakech Design, and the walls are covered with the wallpaper “Bambu” from Lim & Handtryck.
Through a pair of double doors, you move into the charming living room with a Dutch parquet floor.
The room has two large windows with views of the green garden. The walls are wallpapered with a beautiful floral patterned wallpaper called “Tropical Floral” from The Carlisle Company.Â
A gorgeous wood-burning stove warms up the room in the evening and in the winter.
From the stairs in the kitchen, you walk into the upper hall, which features a bay window built with beautifully barred windows from a contemporary glass veranda.
The upper hall is flanked by two bedrooms which you enter through a pair of beautiful glass doors. The master bedroom pairs the “Golden Lily” wallpaper with tongue and groove paneling.
The upper hall features wallpaper by Lim & Handtrick.
The second bedroom is decorated in the ‘Chrysanthemum’ by William Morris.
The room features wardrobes with doors in barred decorative glass.
The bathroom is clad in tongue and groove paneling in a blue-gray shade and a vanity topped with Ekeberg marble.
The house is listed for sale at Alvhem.
