A Charming School Conversion in Sweden
On an island with views of horse paddocks and Lake Mälaren lies an old school building that was recently transformed into a unique home. In this school conversion, you feel miles away from the big city, but Stockholm lies only 1 ½ hours away from this countryside haven.
Sörgården is a former school building from 1920. Under plastic carpets and tapestry, the original elements of the building were preserved, which the current owner brought back into view and carefully restored.
The 299 square meter house is divided over three floors. On the ground floor, the big hall is turned into an open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining room. The first floor is home to two bedrooms, and the basement floor houses an big guest room and utility spaces.
Despite the size, the big hall has a cozy feeling created by plastered walls, painted chest panels, concrete floors, and open and unplaned wood on the ceiling and walls.
a little nook in the living space has been turned into a cozy sitting area with a wooden feature wall and a comfy vintage Chesterfield sofa.
The wood burner adds another layer of coziness to the space.
The kitchen is divided into two areas. In the living space, there is an island with storage and a fridge, perfect for mixing drinks during parties.
But in a small separate room, you can find the real kitchen with gray-beige cabinets topped with solid oak work surfaces, plastered walls, and natural stone floor tiles.
The stage area from its school years has been preserved which is now a perfect play area for kids.
The downstairs bathroom is a beautiful space with pink plastered walls, a concrete sink, white wall tiles, and Höganäs floor tiles in light blue, black and white.
The two bedrooms are located on opposite sides of the upper floor, surrounded by attics and wardrobes. One room has paneled walls and ceiling and the other has painted plaster walls and ceiling.
a pink painted staircase leads you to the basement floor.
The current owner uses the large room in the basement as a guest room and office. It has many full-sized windows, so it’s not a dark room at all. The room has the original wooden floor and gray painted chest panels on the walls.
