A Grand Arts and Crafts House in London
Tucked away in the charming enclave of Stanmore in North London, this splendid Victorian villa masterfully showcases the elegance of the Arts and Crafts movement. It was designed by the renowned architect Alfred Waterhouse, famed for his work on the Natural History Museum in South Kensington.
The Victorian villa blends period features, such as intricate chimneypieces, fine plasterwork, and period joinery, with classical Romanesque elements, such as rounded arches and ornate internal columns. Landscaped grounds with a greenhouse and a garden studio surround the five-bedroom house.

The grand living room has walls lined with honey-colored grasscloth paper. Light flows into the room thanks to the huge windows in two directions, including a bay window with a door leading to the garden.
The light colored furnishing is centered around a Carrera marble fireplace.
The second sitting room, featuring a dark pink sofa, has a lovely white painted fireplace.
The bespoke oak kitchen cabinets are made by Mark Wilkinson Kitchens, which are paired with a granite worktop.
A pretty black chimneypiece with faience tiles and a working fire is flanked by two bespoke cabinets.
Tumbled marble flags connect the spacious kitchen and adjacent dining room, which is set in a light-filled orangery with four casement windows, French windows that open to the garden terrace, and a large skylight.
Wedding doors in the entrance vestibule open into this grand hall, which has scrubbed pitch pine floorboards, Romanesque rounded arches, ornate joinery, and supporting columns.
The beautiful stained glass window above the stairs flood the first floor landing and staircase with soft light.
The modern bathroom has a freestanding bath under the window. The room is fitted with polished stainless steel brassware and white porcelain sanitary ware.
The top floor of the house used to be an artist’s studio. This grand room with arched beams and double-height windows is now a magnificent family room.
The garden features a newly built Victorian-style greenhouse, designed to match the architecture of the main house. It is built from brick at ground level with a pitched glass roof and patterned tiled floor.
The tall entrance porch is set to the side of the house and has a tiled-pitched roof and charming tiles on the ground. It is inset with the original plank door and features three lights in a row just above eye level.
The house was listed for £2,350,000 at Inigo.
