A Colorful Family Home in an Old Gardener’s Cottage in Sweden
The former early 20th-century gardener’s residence at Johannedals Gård by Lake Mälaren near Stockholm has been transformed into a vibrant, colorful family home with large, open living spaces and a wonderful garden with views of the lake.
Johannesdals Gård is a private residential area with six similar houses made of white wood and stone. Together, these six houses share the apple orchard, water, shoreline, road, and garage.
The 152 square meter house pairs original elements like wooden beams and fireplaces with a bold and colorful interior scheme, using wallpapers, colorful furniture, and decor.

From the hall, you step into a social kitchen space with a window seat and a dining table next to the fireplace.

The kitchen uses deep green hues for the cabinets and the backsplash tiles, paired with a wooden countertop and brass handles.

In the center stands a nice kitchen island, made from a reclaimed furniture piece, covered in brass-colored sheet metal, matching the brass handles on the kitchen doors.

A cozy nook has been created next to the fireplace with a rustic dining table with green legs, surrounded by benches and children’s stools. The dining nook is decorated with the “Emery’s Bower Herball / Weld” wallpaper by William Morris.

The red tongue-and-groove paneled door hides the pantry.

Next to the kitchen lies a spacious living room with a low sloped ceiling and many windows facing the garden.

The white walls and wooden floor are paired with bold color accents in the furniture, decor, and this pastel-hued accent wall.

The central hall features a stone floor, beadboard-clad walls, and a smart niche for shoes and coats.

Both floors have a bathroom. The one on the ground floor has simple white and blue tiles and an antique storage cabinet.

There is one bedroom on the ground floor, in a room that presumably was the kitchen since it has an old-fashioned stove.

The room features paneled walls topped with green William Morris Willow Bough wallpaper.

Built-in wardrobes in one corner feature cork doors. There is a door on the right leading to the garden.

A laundry space is hidden behind cane sliding doors, which features a washer, dryer, and sink.

On the first floor, there is a spacious master bedroom with a built-in desk, built-in wardrobes, and an en-suite bathroom.

The walls are decorated with the dark blue “Nocturne” wallpaper by Boråstapeter.

The small en-suite bathroom features the “Golden Lily” wallpaper by William Morris paired with dark blue walls and white-tiled walls.

There are two smaller bedrooms on the first floor, both used as children’s rooms. This room features a yellow-painted tongue-and-groove built-in wardrobe and walls decorated in the “Cosmos” wallpaper by House of Hackney.

The second children’s room features the “Black Panther” wallpaper from Majvillan.

The house has several patios so you can enjoy the sun (or the shade) all day long.

The garden also offers a view of Lake Mälaren.
