A Grand Regency-Style House with a Mature Garden in London
In London’s Hampstead conservation area lies this amazing double-fronted late Regency house, which was the home of biologist and UNESCO Director-General Julian Huxley and his family for most of the 20th century.
The house was built in Regency style in 1832, though there are signs that it replaced and incorporated an earlier building. In the mid 20th-century, Ernst Freud (son of Sigmund) sympathetically altered the house but many period features, like grand proportions, large windows, and fine plasterwork have been preserved.

The house has a unique layout with bedrooms and living rooms on the ground and first floor. We start the tour on the first floor, where you will find this grand living space features three bays with French windows opening to Juliet balconies.
Thanks to the large windows, the room is wonderfully bright, which is accentuated by the warm yellow hue on the walls.
One wall features a marble fireplace.
Moving on to the lower floor, you will find this sitting room with two huge shuttered box sash windows and a marble chimneypiece flanked by alcoves on one side.
One of the smaller rooms on the ground floor is now used as a home atelier.
The house has a farmhouse-style kitchen with gray wooden cabinets topped with a wooden countertop, wooden floorboards, an AGA stove in a lovely tiled niche, and a large rustic wooden dining table.
A large window gives views of the beautiful back garden.
From the kitchen, you can access a utility room with a flagstone floor.
A guest bedroom on the ground floor has a large window facing the garden and charming corner bookshelves.
The central hallway features the original pine floorboards, and the tall ceilings are decorated with Regency plasterwork. From the front door, you have a direct view of the back door and the garden.
The large master bedroom features two huge windows incorporating rise and fall shutters overlooking the garden.
There is a charming bedroom suite on the first floor with a cozy sitting room with a fireplace connected to a spacious bedroom.
The family bathroom is a grand space with a marble checkerboard floor, a freestanding bath, and a separate shower.
From the Yorkstone terrace close to the house, you can wander into the large private garden with a large bay tree, camellia, magnolia, and cherry blossom trees, as well as well-stocked flower beds.
The Yorkstone paved forecourt surrounded by mature holly bushes leads to the front door.
The house is listed for £4,750,000 at Inigo.
