An Idyllic 19th-Century Country House with a Large Garden

On a lush plot that feels miles away from any city stands this beautiful 19th-century Swedish house. Despite its appearance, this historic cottage is only 25 minutes from Stockholm’s city center, but its closest neighbour is the fantastic Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sweden’s best-preserved 17th-century baroque castle.

From the outside, the 19th-century house looks like a quintessential Swedish home, though not in the traditional red shade, but it has a beautiful yellow and green exterior.

The house was completely renovated in 2016, adding a new kitchen and bathroom, and all rooms were painted or wallpapered. Despite the renovation, there are still pretty period features, such as a tiled fireplace in the living room and a beautiful wooden staircase.

Set amongst lush greenery, the house is an idyllic haven, especially in the spring and summer months.

Entry to the home is through a classic glass veranda. The entry veranda features built-in benches with drawers on either side, topped with cushions upholstered in a botanical print, matching the lush outdoors.

The living spaces on the ground floor are laid out in a circular layout. The living room features a large bay window offering views of the lush outdoors.

Thanks to the four large windows in multiple directions, the living room is bathed in natural light.

In the center of the room stands a traditional tiled fireplace, a kakelugn. From the living room, you can access the hall, the kitchen, and the dining room on the left.

The kitchen is located in the center of the plan, with the living room on one side and a wide opening to the dining room on the other side. In the corner, the stove wall, hob, and flue from an old wood-burning stove have been preserved as a charming feature.

The kitchen is designed in a classic style featuring white cabinets paired with oak countertops and white backsplash tiles.

With windows on three sides, the dining room is flooded with natural light, and thanks to the glass doors, there is an easy connection to the lush garden. Perfect in the summer months.

The dining room door opens onto the small wooden deck, which is just big enough for a bistro set.

The hall and staircase are decorated with the Willow Bough wallpaper by William Morris.

There are two bedrooms on the first floor. The largest bedroom features a nice wooden floor, white walls, and a door leading to a balcony with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

A second balcony can be accessed via the first-floor landing.

The second bedroom is equally charming, with windows that face the trees, letting in warm, natural light. The walls are decorated with a light wallpaper that harmonizes with the house’s 19th-century charm.
