IKEA and XBOX Launch the YXSTABY Home Gaming Collection
Gaming no longer belongs to a single screen, room, or dedicated setup. It happens at kitchen tables, on sofas, and in shared living spaces, often alongside homework, dinner, and other everyday activities.
Recognizing this shift, IKEA and Xbox have joined forces to create YXSTABY, a nine-piece collection designed to make gaming feel at home wherever it takes place.
Created for the more than three billion people around the world who play games, the collection combines practical storage, flexible furniture, and playful design details.
Each piece makes it easier to set up for a gaming session and put everything away once the game is over, without turning the room into a permanent gaming zone.
Designed for Players and Shared Homes
YXSTABY was developed through a close collaboration between IKEA and Xbox, with designers from both companies working together on every product.
The project brings together Xbox’s 25 years of gaming experience and IKEA’s more than 80 years of knowledge about life at home.
The design process also included visits to homes where gaming forms part of daily life. These insights helped the teams consider not only what players need, but also how gaming furniture affects the people and spaces around them.
“How people play at home has shifted, and it is as much about relaxing and connecting with others as it is about performing, which changes what the space has to do,” says Philip Dilé, Product Design Developer at IKEA.
“Xbox knows what players need from their gaming setup, and we know how to solve the small problems that come with adapting that to everyday life at home.
Together, we set out to make furniture people really want in their home, not furniture they accept because it is what you need to game.”
Flexible Furniture for Gaming Anywhere
Among the collection’s most notable pieces is a mobile TV stand, the first product of its kind IKEA has developed. You can roll it wherever the game is taking place, and it includes storage at the back for consoles, cables, and other equipment. When playtime is over, you can simply move the entire setup out of the way.
For homes without a dedicated gaming room, the YXSTABY toolbox offers another practical solution. It keeps controllers, cables, and hardware together, while its closed lid conceals the contents and doubles as a laptop stand.
This lets a dining table become a temporary gaming station, then quickly return to its original purpose.
A wheeled side table takes a similar flexible approach. You can move it beside a sofa or chair to provide a secure place for controllers, drinks, and other essentials.
Charging space is hidden behind sliding doors, helping to keep cables and equipment organized.
The collection also includes a monitor stand designed to hold one or two screens at a more comfortable height. Storage beneath the stand keeps the desktop clear, while integrated holders provide dedicated places for a phone, headphones, and controller.
Familiar Shapes from Xbox Controller
The iconic Xbox controller provides much of the collection’s visual inspiration. Its recognizable shapes, textures, and details have been reinterpreted as functional objects for the home.
The controller’s D-pad appears as both a comfortable cushion and a decorative platter made from polished stainless steel.
A mirrored display box presents controllers, figurines, and collectibles from multiple angles, turning gaming equipment into part of the room’s decoration.
Perhaps the most playful design is the thumbstick stool. Developed using the controller’s original 3D design files and created in collaboration with Xbox device designers, the stool transforms a small object normally moved by a thumb into a full-size seat.
Its textured surface references the original thumbstick grip, while the seat tilts with the user as they move during play.
“I queued all night 25 years ago to get my hands on the first Xbox console, so those shapes are nostalgic to me,” says IKEA designer David Wahl. “The challenge was making it work as a stool with the right seating curve and stability, while still feeling like a thumbstick. It even moves the way a thumbstick does, so it tilts with you while you play.”
Gaming Furniture with a Scandinavian Look
Although YXSTABY is inspired by gaming, the collection has been designed to sit comfortably alongside existing home furnishings. Straight lines are balanced with softer shapes, while a muted palette of white, black, and beige gives the pieces a simple Scandinavian character.
Touches of Xbox green highlight practical features such as pockets, slings, and compartments, making it easy to see where to store controllers, headphones, and other gaming equipment.
IKEA unveiled the YXSTABY collection at Gamescom in August, and it will be available in IKEA stores and online from 1 October.
