Light-Filled Rooms and Wallpapers in a Swedish Country House
Set on a large corner plot with a green garden, this beautifully preserved turn-of-the-century villa in Sweden is a home full of quiet character and enduring quality. Over the past several decades, sensitive renovations have carefully upheld its original spirit.
The home features beautiful original elements like high-mullioned windows, soap-scrubbed pine floors, decorative tiled stoves, beadboard panels, and mirrored doors that are paired with contemporary additions in a period style.
Light pours into every room through tall, triple-aspect glazing, casting shifting shadows across lovingly restored floors and period wallpapers, each chosen carefully to suit the historic home. The open-plan layout on the ground floor lends itself perfectly to social gatherings and family life.
The living room is connected to the dining room and a small veranda, creating a spacious open-plan living space with light coming in from three directions.
In the corner of the room stands a beautiful Art Nouveau fireplace, pairing wonderfully with the wooden floorboards.
The walls in the living room are decorated with the light beige, subtle medallion-patterned “Lillie Sandstone” wallpaper by Sandberg.
Next to the living room lies a sun-filled veranda with large windows facing the garden. The room is now used as a home office but it can also be a fantastic reading room.
The walls in the veranda are decorated with a reproduction of a 19th-century wallpaper that was found when Hudiksvall’s theater was restored.
The dining room connects the living room with the kitchen. It’s a spacious and comfortable space with a fireplace in the corner that creates a warm atmosphere during dinner parties. The walls are decorated with the “Gabriel” wallpaper by Sandberg.
The kitchen fits a country house perfectly. The solid wood cabinets are site-built and painted in a calm, light beige-gray hue. The cabinets are topped with a walnut countertop and classic white subway tiles from Höganäs.
The walls are painted in “Stockholm White” and a shelf has been fitted above the door for even more storage.
A smart combined utility room and guest toilet features white tongue-and-groove paneling.
The entry hall features a site-built storage solution for shoes and coats as well as storage under the stairs and another built-in wardrobe. The linoleum floor has a fun and cheerful light blue and white checkerboard pattern.
The staircase is decorated with a beautiful wallpaper from Duro’s “Old Swedish” collection.
The fine original wooden staircase leads you to the spacious first floor landing that can be used as a library or as a music room, as it is now.
The first floor also has a veranda on the same spot as the ground floor. This room is also used as a home office and features walls decorated with the “ElsagĂĄrden” wallpaper from Duro, and the windows offer views of Lake Mälaren.
The master bedroom features built-in wardrobes painted in a gray-beige shade paired with the dark blue “Nocturne” wallpaper by BorĂĄstapeter.
There are two more double bedrooms on the first floor. Both feature wallpaper walls and one room has built-in wardrobes.
The house is surrounded by a lovely green garden featuring an apple tree, several seating areas, and a greenhouse.
