A Modern Bungalow with a Terrazzo Kitchen and Magnificent Views
Perched on a hill on the outskirts of the historic city of Bath stands this beautiful modern villa that is the collaborative work of Forgeworks architects and Celia McCarthy, creative director and founder of Bath-based interior design practice Richardson Studio, who is also the owner of the house.
Together, they transformed a 1950s bungalow in poor condition by cladding it with sustainable cedar, extending it, and adding a mono-pitch roof to draw the eye outward toward the magnificent views of the Somerset countryside, the city of Bath, and even as far as South Wales.
The house is designed with great emphasis on blending indoor and outdoor living. The main living spaces and the master bedroom are connected by a large terrace.
The sitting room features full-height Internorm sliders to the terrace and engineered oak floorboards that echo the ceiling beams. A reimagined fireplace has been added to the room, which has been fitted with handmade pink tiles.
The open-plan kitchen and dining room is the heart of the home. The pitched ceiling features exposed glulam timber beams and textured wood-fibre panels, adding a natural and warm element to the space.
The kitchen pairs bespoke band-sawn oak cabinets with a bold terrazzo countertop and backsplash.
The walls are treated with breathable clay plaster, and light gray porcelain tiles line the floor.
Just off the kitchen lies the snug/television room, which has a bespoke cabinet lining one wall, apple green walls, and a skylight that draws in natural light.
The far corner of the house is home to the master bedroom, which has access to the terrace and incredible views.
The pink-paneled headboard separates the space with the sleeping area on one side and a walk-in closet behind.
The master bathroom features a Lusso stone bath, a walk-in shower, and encaustic cement tiles underfoot.
The long double-height central corridor connects all the rooms in the house and features bold yellow paneling.
There are three more bedrooms in the house, each with bespoke fitted storage. One of the bedrooms has its own bathroom with pink tiles. The other two share a larger family bathroom.
The ground also features a small garden studio designed by Richardson Studio using natural materials and with the same spectacular views as the main house.
Terraced garden surrounds the house, designed to promote biodiversity and ecological sustainability, with bee-friendly flowers, layered planting, seasonal shrubs, and a wildflower meadow.
The house is listed for £2,000,000 at The Modern House.
