Pattern, Color, and Character in a Historic Country House Apartment

Set within the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park, this remarkable two-bedroom apartment in Grade II-listed Binderton House is a rare blend of historical grandeur and imaginative design.

The house dates to the 17th century and carries the layered charm of Georgian elegance. Inside, interior designer Martin Brudnizki has exquisitely reimagined it, creating a home rich in color, texture, and personality while honouring the building’s extraordinary architectural heritage.

Binderton House was built around 1680 and renovated in the Georgian style in the late 18th century. Its symmetrical red-brick façade, punctuated by classic sash windows (carefully refitted with antique glass and UV filters), is fronted by an elegant stucco porch with ionic columns and a semi-circular fanlight.

Over the years, it has welcomed notable guests and owners, including Anthony Eden (who briefly lived here), Churchill, Eisenhower, and Prince Philip. It is also believed to be the subject of Rex Whistler’s final oil painting.

The apartment features nearly 1,800 sq ft of space with soaring sash windows and direct access to four acres of tiered communal gardens; this apartment is one of only two in the building to enjoy such a privilege.

The entire apartment celebrates color, patterns, and textures. High-quality materials have been used, paired with a carefully selected color palette using Edward Bulmer paints.

The drawing room is a showstopper. A grand bay window and a glazed door open directly onto the gardens, while original pine panelling, gold-leaf egg-and-dart cornicing, and a dramatic 18th-century paneled fireplace create a sense of understated opulence.

The kitchen is a study in joyful colour, with “Dutch Orange” walls and “Invisible Green” cabinets, both hues by Edward Bulmer. The bespoke cabinets are paired with finials from Orior Furniture and topped with an Arabescato marble countertop and backsplash.

Two large sash windows with window seats fill the room with natural light and offer lovely views of the garden. A dining area has been fitted between two green cabinets, with a built-in bench and a wooden table.

The primary bedroom suite feels like something from a country house hotel. Walls, curtains, and the custom headboard are all dressed in Jean Monro’s floral ‘Lustmore’ fabric, creating a lush, enveloping atmosphere.

The skirting boards and ceilings are picked out in Edward Bulmer’s posy-pink ‘Rose’ from this design, creating a cohesive and romantic look.
