Red and Brown Tones in a Renovated Turn-of-the-Century Apartment
This 94-square-meter apartment in the Södermalm area of Stockholm is the perfect combination of grand spaces and cozy interiors. The 3,3-meter-high ceilings, two-meter-high windows, tiled fireplaces, and stucco add grand historic charm to the interiors, while the color palette and furnishings create a cozy ambiance.
The apartment has been carefully renovated, preserving its historical elements while adding modern, carefully selected materials and furnishings. A solid oak chevron floor runs throughout the home, adding a classic touch, and storage space has been added. The brown and red tones add color without feeling overwhelming.

Though modest in size, the living room feels spacious and grand thanks to its high ceiling, large window, and grand fireplace.

The walls in the living room are painted in light colors that lean towards yellow. The walls are painted in ‘Scandinavian Light’ while the joinery is painted in ‘Soft Radiance’, both from Jotun.

The light tones are paired with warm color accents, for example, in the rug hanging on the wall designed by Linda Sjunnesson.

A large wooden dining table adds a social element to the living room. The wide, green-tiled fireplace is a beautiful reminder of the apartment’s building period.

From the living room, double doors lead to a bedroom that is now used as a home office.

Do you like red? The home office has a bold design with walls, ceiling, joinery, and stucco painted in Statement Red by Jotun.

The custom-built bookcase with a custom-built oak ladder was added in 2024, allowing space for a reading bench.

The curved desk offers a perfect working space with views out of the window and into the living room.

The brown hall connects all the rooms in the house.

The kitchen is small but has a very practical design. The renovated kitchen features cabinets with handmade fronts and oak-veneer covers, made at a carpentry workshop in Stockholm. They are topped with stone counters.

The walls and double row of upper cabinets (maximizing storage space by using the high ceilings) are painted in ‘White Heather’ by Jotun.

On the other side, a built-in bench (also in oak veneer) is fitted in front of the window, adding seating space and a nice spot for breakfast or a cup of coffee in the afternoon.

The deep window sill is also used for storage.

Two artworks by Else Klange (‘Färg världar’ and ‘Utsikt över landsbygden’) add warm color accents to the kitchen space.

The apartment’s largest bedroom faces the quiet courtyard and has a balcony. The room is painted in a light gray hue (Tidlös by Jotun).

The long wall behind the bed is fitted with a wardrobe wall featuring custom-made oak-veneer doors, matching the kitchen cabinets.

The room also features an original built-in wardrobe next to the tiled fireplace.

The hall features an original serving cabinet.

The entry hall features built-in wardrobes and custom-built hall furniture with a hat rack, shoe storage, and drawers. The walls, ceiling, and joinery are painted in the muted-brown shade called ‘Scullery’ by Little Greene.
