A Carefully Renovated Family Home in Sweden
This semi-detached house in Sweden was owned by the same family for more than 100 years. When the current owners bought it, they started a sensitive renovation, preserving and recovering old historic details while adding a new kitchen in a style that suits the historic bones of the early 20th-century house.
This family home has a wonderful sense of calm, thanks to the muted color palette and the historic elements like wall paneling, tiled fireplace, slatted windows, and mirror doors that create a cozy atmosphere.
The main living room is located on the first floor of the house. It is a wonderful room with a slanted ceiling on one side and built-in bookshelves on the other.
The walls are decorated with the ‘Alica’ wallpaper by BorÃ¥stapeter. The dove blue shade of the wallpaper returns to the color of the built-in bookshelves, creating a harmonious palette.
In the corner of the room stands the original traditional Swedish tiled fireplace. The floorboards are painted in muted gray-green linseed oil paint from Gysinge.
The kitchen was completed a year ago in a style that makes it look like it has always been here. The classic cabinets have been brush-painted in a matt gray-green color from Jotun, which continues on the wood paneling above the workbench.
The classic gray-green cabinets are paired with brass fittings from Byggfabriken and a microcement countertop.
The kitchen island serves as a natural divider between the cooking and dining area while also offering plenty of storage space in cabinets on both sides.
The spacious kitchen has plenty of room for a large dinner table, making this room ideal for dinner parties. The walls are painted in an antique white shade, and in the corner stands a gorgeous tile fireplace with pink and green ornaments.
There is a second sitting room on the ground floor. The paneling is painted in ‘Pearl Gray’ while the ceiling is painted in ‘Antikvit’ from Ottosson. The exposed brick wall gives the room extra character.
Simple IKEA Ivar cabinets are fitted against the wall and painted in the same color as the walls to make them blend in perfectly.
The ground floor toilet was also completely renovated. The walls are paneled and painted in Jotun’s ‘Evening Sky’ paired with the ‘Dancing Crane’ wallpaper from BorÃ¥stapeter.
The spacious hallway has wood-paneled walls painted in Ovolin’s ‘Pearl Gray’. The wooden floorboards have been given a checkerboard pattern.
The master bedroom used to be a kitchen, which is still visible by the sink next to the bed. The room is painted in ‘Degeberga Green by Ottosson.
A corner of exposed brick next to the bed gives the room character, and it looks wonderful in combination with the green wood panels. The old kitchen sink has been turned into the ideal pot for a climbing plant.
The wardrobe in the corner has been designed to make it look old-fashioned but it is a recent addition.
The small bathroom was also completely renovated a couple of years ago. The room is designed in a classic style with white subway tiles, brass fittings from Sekelskifte and Tapwell, and green and white Victorian floor tiles from Byggfabriken. The non-tiled walls are painted in ‘Portland Stone’ from Little Greene.
The stairs in the living room give access to this charming attic bedroom with white-painted floorboards and walls painted in ‘Pearl Grey’ from Ovolin.
The house has a wooden terrace overlooking a lush garden with apple trees, tulip trees, lilac bushes, rhododendrons, and more flowers and plants.
