A Small Ground Floor Apartment with Cozy Nooks, Plants, and an IKEA Kitchen
On the raised ground floor of a late 19th century apartment building in Stockholm lies this charming one-bedroom apartment decorated with plants, a Japanese-inspired IKEA kitchen, and access to a cozy courtyard space.
The 44-square-meter apartment originally consisted of two even smaller apartments (one of which was the carriage maker’s workshop), which were merged to create the current home.
The apartment now features a perfect balance of open-plan spaces and cozy nooks that create an exciting floor plan with social areas and nooks that can be used for a craft area/home office, storage, and the kitchen.

The apartment features an open-plan living space with a cozy sitting area by the large window and a kitchen in the niche.

The deep window niche lends itself perfectly for (hanging) plants, and together with the views of the patio, where something is always blooming (evergreens, stunning autumn colors in the Japanese maple, and a flowering cherry tree that turns bright pink in the spring), you bring the outdoors in.

The green rug and the armchair with a botanical print accentuate this natural element.

The living space features a laminated oak-oiled parquet floor with durable mottled granite ceramic tiles (“Solida Black” with black grout) in the kitchen.

The kitchen features vertically grooved, solid oak doors from the IKEA “Ulriksdal” collection, which are paired with a matt-polished Carrara countertop and backsplash.

The kitchen was built on site to fit perfectly into the living room niche, with high cabinets on one side, creating a natural divider between the sitting area and the kitchen.

Along one wall, an open bookcase made from String shelves adds plenty of storage.

From the living room, you move into the cozy bedroom with large windows and a gray-green hue on the walls.

The bedroom space is divided into two areas, with a charming niche with a rounded wall that is now used as a home office/craft area, featuring a custom-made oak veneer desk from the 1940s.

The small window features a preserved Carrara marble window sill.

A niche next to the desk is fitted with bookshelves, while a niche in the bedroom space is used for clothes storage. The floor here is tiled with Kolmårds marbled granite ceramic, as this area leads to the shower room.

The bedroom also features wardrobes featuring space-saving sliding doors.

The shower room features Granite ceramic tiles, “Bricmate Kolmården”, on the floor, paired with dark blue, handmade “Frammenti Blu Notte” from San Marino on the walls. The apartment has a separate toilet in the hall.

The small hall is painted white with a dark blue ceiling. Further on, between the hall and the living room, behind a half-French mirrored door from the 1930s, is more built-in storage space.

Right outside the apartment is a shared courtyard space with greenery and seating areas.
