A Swedish Apartment with Period Features and Charming Color Pops
On the second floor of a 1920s apartment building in the charming Södermalm area in Stockholm lies this wonderful apartment with period details from the 20s, contemporary furnishings, and charming color pops in every room of the house.
The apartment showcases a lovely blend of early 20th-century charm and contemporary design. Period features like herringbone parquet floors, barred windows with handblown glass, a fireplace, serving cabinets, and mirrored doors have been preserved and paired with a fresh interior palette using bold color accents to spruce up the spaces.
The apartment has an open-plan living area with pastel yellow walls, a herringbone parquet floor, and woodwork painted in a darker yellow shade.
These muted tones are paired with bolder color accents like a blue sofa, a red dining table bench, and colorful cushions. It creates a vibrant, colorful space without being overwhelmingly colorful.
A beautiful rustic wooden dining table sits between the sitting area and the kitchen.
The kitchen was renovated a couple of years ago, adding classic white cabinet doors with white metro backsplash tiles and a double row of upper cabinets to maximize storage space. I like that the uppermost cabinets have glass doors for a more open look.
The original built-in serving cabinets from the 1920s have been preserved. The new kitchen cabinets pair seamlessly with these cupboards.
I have often mentioned it, but older Swedish apartments often have an inner hall. This space usually connects all the rooms in the house and can be used as an extra sitting room, a home office, or even an extra bedroom.
This inner hall is used as an extra sitting room with bookshelves lining one wall and a charming fireplace in the corner with a limestone shelf. The pale yellow walls are paired with blue and terracotta color accents.
Barred double doors with the original handblown glass lead you into the bedroom.
The bedroom also pairs a muted neutral tone on the wall with bolder color accents. The walls are painted in Jotun’s ‘Froströk’ while the ceiling is painted a vibrant green shade, and the wardrobe wall has ochre yellow doors.
A pretty antique desk sits under the window, creating a charming home office.
The hallway pairs pale yellow walls with pine floorboards and an antique 1920s corner chair.
