A Unique House in London with Plant-Filled Interiors and a Lush Garden
Next to traditional red-brick Victorian houses in the Forest Hill area in London stands a narrow modern home with a façade of chalky slip bricks and burnt cedar cladding. The house, designed by Studio BAM, looks small and narrow from the outside, but the angular floor plan offers charming interior spaces filled with plants.
The two-bedroom house is divided over two floors and features pared-back interiors open to a lush garden and a tropical central loggia. Large glass sliding doors blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors, enhanced by the many plants you’ll find indoors.

The narrow two-meter wide front entry widens into a charming, wide, and bright living space in the back with access to the lush garden.
The interiors are slightly industrial, with an exposed wooden ceiling, metal pipes, and terrazzo floors, but the many plants decorating the home create a nice balance.
Along one wall, the space is fitted with a modern black kitchen topped with the same terrazzo as the floor tiles. Simple white tiles serve as a backsplash, and the shelf above the worktop ensures the kitchen feels open.
The large wooden dining table in the center of the room serves as a natural divider between lounging and cooking.
The main bedroom is located on the ground floor and centered around the loggia, which teems with tropical palms and ferns. One wall is fitted with bespoke ply wardrobes.
The bathroom features a mirrored bath surround and Primus Vitoria tiles.
The angled stairs, illuminated by a skylight, lead to the first floor, where you’ll find the second bedroom and bathroom.
The second bedroom is lit by a large portrait picture window overlooking the sedum roof of the ground floor. The entire first floor has a gray vinyl floor.
The lush garden has a brick patio that forms a central seating area amid the bamboo, fatsia, and grasses.
The entry to the home is via an elegant brickwork passageway planted with wildflowers on top.
The house is listed for £850,000 at The Modern House.
