A 1940s Apartment Decorated in Pink and Yellow Hues
This colorful one-bedroom apartment is located on the second floor of a 1940s building in a small cul-de-sac just south of Stockholm’s city center. Though only 41 square meters, the apartment has an efficient layout and large windows that make it feel airy.
But the apartment’s harmonious color scheme is the real highlight of this midcentury home. Gentle pink, yellow, and green tones are effortlessly combined, turning the spaces into calm and inviting rooms.
The living room is color-drenched in a soothing apricot pink shade (“Pinje” by Alcro), paired with a burgundy window frame and door.
Natural light flows into the living room through the large square window and glass balcony door. I love how these midcentury apartments always have large windows, making the homes feel so much lighter and more spacious.
A charming feature is the custom-built desk under the window. It is painted in the same burgundy shade as the window frame, creating a uniform look. It is such a simple yet beautiful home office idea.
The living room opens onto a charming balcony. The living areas in Stockholm are always so open and full of trees that even though you live in the city, you’re still connected to nature.
On the other side, the television is surrounded by a nice gallery wall.
To make the apartment feel more spacious, there are open doorways to the other rooms, including a wide opening to the hall, which makes the living room feel bigger and lets natural light flow easily through the apartment.
The sliding door toward the bedroom is painted the same color as the walls, making it blend in, but with the door open, light comes in from two directions.
The kitchen was updated in 2023, with a repaint of the IKEA cabinets in a lime-green shade and the addition of midcentury fittings to complement the apartment’s building style. A new Dutch parquet floor was also added to the kitchen.
On one side, the cabinets are topped with a stainless steel sink, while the other side features smaller cabinets with a wooden worktop and a traditional midcentury pantry shelf.
The corner has been left free from cabinets, creating a small bar seating. I love how the sunshine has been brought into this small room with the sunny-yellow walls and ceiling.
But that’s not all the storage in this small kitchen. One wall is fitted with floor-to-ceiling cabinets, both open and closed, adding a lot of storage to such a modest space.
From the kitchen, folding doors give access to the bedroom (which can also be accessed via the living room).
The small bedroom is painted in a warm, muted pink shade, paired with burgundy floor-to-ceiling wardrobes.
Tucked under the window, there is just enough room for a double bed. From the window, you have views of the Nackareservatet (a nature reserve area).
The bathroom is simple and slightly older, but in this room, the owner also added a color pop with the sky-blue painted ceiling and the blue window frame.
The hall features a functional niche with cabinets, a hat rack, and shoe racks. The walls are painted white with a light apricot ceiling (the same color as the living room) and a light parquet floor.
A velvet blue curtain can be drawn in front of the front door.
