A 19th Century London Cottage with a Stunning Kitchen Extension
This mid-19th-century cottage in London pairs preserved original elements with contemporary design. In collaboration with Georgina Mann, the current owners have renovated and extended the two-bedroom cottage, with a new and light kitchen extension.
The house is decorated with a considered material and color palette. Rich colors like terracotta red and ochre yellow are paired with natural hues like green and blue, creating cozy and inviting interior spaces.
The front of the ground floor plan is home to one of the sitting rooms with a large bay window featuring original sashes and a fireplace with a cast-iron surround set with patterned tiles.
Between the front sitting room and the kitchen extension lies a cozy snug painted in a terracotta pink shade and fitted with original floorboards treated with a dark wood stain and a fireplace with the original surround.
The kitchen extension pairs modern design with cottage-style interiors. This spacious and light room is the heart of the home with a pitched ceiling featuring two large skylights and French doors leading to the back garden.
The handmade kitchen cabinets are painted in ‘Dark Stone Warm’ by Little Greene, paired with an oak countertop, brass fittings, and a large double butler sink under the garden window.
The double butler sink has brass fixtures, including a boiling water tap, from deVOL.
The kitchen is fitted with limestone floors from Mandarin Stone.
The other side of the room is fitted with built-in banquette benches to create a dining space with plenty of seating. The walls in the kitchen are painted in ‘Old White’ by Farrow and Ball.
The cottage has two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes on the first floor. The master bedroom lies at the back of the plan with a sash window overlooking the garden and an en-suite bathroom.
The master bedroom is color-drenched in ‘India Yellow’ by Farrow and Ball.
The en-suite bathroom features monochromatic Parisian-inspired mosaic tiles, paneled walls painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Old White’, and a roll-top bathtub with floor-mounted fixtures from Burlington.
The second bedroom features two sash windows, beige walls, and red striped textiles for a bold color pop.
There is a second bathroom on the ground floor with deep green zellige tiles and Burlington fittings.
At the back of the house is a city garden laid with bricks in a herringbone pattern and a pergola with and old vine. The brick boundary walls feature climbing ivy and roses.
The house is listed for £900,000 at Inigo.
