A 19th-Century Old Bank House is a Cozy and Rustic Family Home
In the heart of Yoxford, a quietly charming Suffolk village, this three-bedroom house tells a story that stretches back nearly two centuries. Behind its modest façade lies a home layered with history, thoughtfully restored to balance period character with contemporary comfort.
Dating to the 19th century, the house began life as a pair of cottages before evolving through a series of unexpected roles. In 1908, part of the building became the Waveney Photographic Studio; a few years later, it served as a sub-branch of Lloyds Bank. By 1939, it had earned the name ‘Bank House.’
Today, the house retains a strong sense of that history. Original timber studs, exposed lintels and a striking double-sided inglenook fireplace anchor the interiors, while a carefully considered palette of paint colours brings a quiet cohesion to the spaces.

A gabled porch frames the entrance, where a black front door opens into a central hallway flanked by two sitting rooms.

Timber studs subtly divide the spaces, creating intimacy without enclosure. This sitting room is centred around a Jøtul stove, offering a cosy retreat in cooler months.

The dining room forms the heart of the home, a warm, sociable space complete with a wood-burning stove that connects to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, red quarry tiles underfoot lend a rustic texture. The handmade cabinets are finished in rich tones from Abigail Ahern’s palette and are paired with granite worktops, creating a space that feels both practical and expressive.

The second sitting room features half-height paneling and oak flooring. This room feels lighter and more open, with French doors leading directly onto the garden.

The first floor is home to three bedrooms, each accessed through traditional ledged pine doors that reinforce the house’s heritage.

The master bedroom is softly enveloped in a dusky pink, lending it a calm, cocooning quality.

This second bedroom is painted in an earthy green that draws in tones from the surrounding landscape.

The third bedroom is a smaller space, but very cozy. It features a skylight and a small window by the bed. It also gives access to the storage tucked neatly under the roofline.

There is a family bathroom with a separate bath and shower on the first floor, and a shower room with green tiling on the ground floor.

At the rear, a generous west-facing garden unfolds, bordered by woodland that enhances the sense of privacy and connection to nature. Mostly laid to lawn, it offers ample room for planting, play, or outdoor dining as the sun sets.

The house is listed for £395.000 at Inigo.
