A Thoughtfully Renovated 1884 Victorian Home in Nyack

Today, I want to take you to Nyack, a small and vibrant village on the banks of the Hudson River, just 20 miles from New York City. In this charming town stands a beautiful Victorian villa, the home of The Nordroom reader Amy and her husband, and we can take a look inside.

According to research from the Historical Society of the Nyacks, the house dates back to around 1884, a detail that shaped how Amy and her husband approached both ownership and renovation.

Rather than seeing themselves simply as homeowners, they began to think of themselves as caretakers of a property with a long history and hopefully a long future.

Their connection to the house started in June 2021. Shortly after getting married, they passed by the property on their way to their honeymoon and were immediately drawn to it.

Although the house was in a neglected state, it stood out for its scale, character, and architectural presence. By September of that same year, Amy and her husband had bought what they now refer to as their “mini mansion.”

The renovation process has taken four years and has been guided by a clear intention to preserve and enhance the home’s original character rather than replace it.

Wherever possible, original details have been maintained, and elements that show age, such as patina and natural wear, have been treated as assets rather than flaws. The house still has its quirks, and that is something they have chosen to embrace, which makes this house feel like a home.

Even now, the home is not considered fully finished. For Amy and her husband, that is part of the appeal. A house with this kind of history evolves over time, and they are comfortable allowing the process to continue gradually.

The overall design of the home is best described as eclectic and personal. Instead of following a single style or trend, they have combined pieces from different periods, mixing older elements with more contemporary ones. The result is a space that feels layered and unique.

The cozy kitchen is a place to gather, featuring beautiful gray-beige cabinetry, a wooden floor painted in a classic checkerboard pattern, and a round table in the center.

Amy’s guiding principle when making design decisions is “be faithful to your own taste, nothing you truly love ever goes out of style.”

This approach is reflected throughout the home, where each room is built around pieces and choices that have meaning rather than simply fitting a particular aesthetic.

Comfort and warmth have also been key priorities. Through the use of color, texture, and collected objects, they have created a home that feels inviting and lived-in.

The goal was not to create a perfect or polished interior, though every detail is carefully considered, but one that supports how they live.

This house is more than just a renovation project. It is a long-term investment in a place with history, character, and personality. Amy and her husband see themselves as part of its ongoing story, continuing what began more than a century ago while making it their own.
