A Renovated Kitchen with Terrazzo Tiles in a 1940s Apartment

On the first floor of a 1940s apartment building just south of Stockholm’s city center, this 42 square meter apartment was renovated in recent years, creating unique spaces with terrazzo tiles and a large outdoor terrace that extends the living space.

The floor plan is completely open, with a partial wall dividing the kitchen from the living room, and a glazed room divider between the seating area and the bedroom. This allows light to flow through the spaces and helps create a more flowing, airy atmosphere.

The renovated kitchen is the heart of the home. The room is defined by the colorful terrazzo tiles on the floor and as the backsplash.

The kitchen features custom-built cabinets from Stomverket with pure wooden doors and drawers with a beautiful, rustic grain. The cabinets along the other wall are painted the same light pink as the walls, making them blend more into the space.

On the other side, a dining area has been created with a wooden bench with green cushions paired with a gallery wall, creating a personal atmosphere.

An open doorway towards the hall creates a flowing layout, enhanced by the continuous terrazzo tiling.

A glazed door opens toward the apartment’s private terrace, a huge highlight for this small home.

The large terrace features a wooden deck and plenty of space for an additional dining table and a lounge area. Potted plants add nature to the space.

From the kitchen, you move seamlessly into the apartment’s sitting area.

I love the curved shelves on the side of the kitchen cabinets and on the partition wall, that is clad in a similar rustic wood grain as the kitchen cabinets.

The light pink shade of the kitchen walls continues into the living room, paired with an oak parquet floor. Light flows into the space through the kitchen opening and the glass wall, painted a subtle gray-green.

Throughout the home, art lines the walls, creating personal spaces.

The bedroom can be turned into a private space by drawing the floral-patterned curtains in front of the room divider.

The bedroom is also painted in a light pink hue, including the slanted cabinets above the bed that are similar to the kitchen cabinets you can find in apartments built in this time period.

On the other side, two double wardrobes add more storage space. From the bed, you have a lovely view of the treetops at the back of the house.

In the hall, the terrazzo tiles return, paired with the same pink hue on the walls. A vintage, midcentury cabinet adds storage, while a simple hat and shoe rack provides storage next to the front door.
