A Colorful Family Home with Open-Plan Spaces in Amsterdam
On one of Amsterdam’s canal streets, you can find this colorful family home with large open-plan spaces and three generous bedrooms. A couple of years ago, Nicemakers Interior Design Studio renovated this canal house into a colorful family home.
The house was formerly owned by an elderly woman whose family had resided there since 1901. The house bore evident signs of its age, appearing dark and dilapidated. So, the new owners wanted to infuse warmth and fresh energy that would cater to the young, ambitious couple’s needs.
An inviting interior was created by blending quirky vintage charm with a lively modern flair and personal, tactile details. The couple’s inspiring assortment of heirlooms, mementos, and photographs were seamlessly integrated into the design.
The ground floor is designed in one big open space with windows on two sides, a garden at the back, and canal views at the front. At the back of the house the designers created a dining space and a sunken sitting room.
The sunken sitting area is a cozy spot with rusty red upholstered sofas and built-in bookshelves. From the sofa, you have a lovely view of the garden.
The kitchen is located at the center of the ground floor, with a walnut island that was designed to resemble a writing desk. The island is paired with petrol-green kitchen cabinets and green marble worktops.
The original hallway has been incorporated into the living area. The entire home has a beautiful wooden chevron floor.
At the front of the house is a second sitting area with a blue velvet sofa. The entire ground floor has wooden ceiling beams, showcasing the history of the building.
On the first floor are three bedrooms. The master bedroom is located at the back of the house with French windows overlooking the garden, a walk-in closet, and an en suite bathroom.
The bathroom is a wonderful space with half-tiled walls and small white hexagon tiles on the floor. The room features a vintage wooden vanity with double sinks and brass fittings, and a large round mirror.
On the other side they created a unique shower and bath combination.
The large room at the front of the house is now a wonderful children’s room with light pink walls, coral curtains, and a large custom desk in front of the huge windows.
On the other side, the wall is fitted with built-in wardrobes and a bunk bed.
The third bedroom is also a children’s room with green walls and wardrobes and the Quentins Menagerie wallpaper by Osborne & Little.
The second bathroom has a black-and-white palette paired with brass fittings.
