A Cozy Home with Exposed Beams in a Former Post Office

On a pretty street in an English village close to the North Downs, you can find a charming historic home with exposed beams and a pretty garden. The house is set in the former village post office, and the current owners have sensitively restored the house by preserving historic features, like the timber floorboards and the exposed beams.

The former post office dates back to the early 1700s, and it’s packed with original elements that have luckily been preserved. The 1687 sq ft house is set across three floors and features three bedrooms on the first floor and two more attic rooms on the top floor.

From the cozy kitchen, you have access to a pretty garden with a dedicated space for growing vegetables, a greenhouse, and fruit trees.

The kitchen and breakfast room are located at the back of the house. The room is defined by its beautifully restored beams and the large inglenook fireplace.

A stable door gives access to the south-facing garden.

The kitchen design is kept simple with light-painted cabinets, gray tiles, and a wooden worktop. With so many beautiful historic features in this room, this kitchen doesn’t need to make a statement.

A fun accent is the handcrafted replica of the house, made by a neighbor, which conceals the boiler.

The bedroom at the back of the house overlooks the garden and is painted in a warm dusty rose shade called ‘Dawn Warning’ by Francesca’s Paints.

The third bedroom is painted in ‘Sea Breeze’.

The top floor has been divided into two rooms, with restored timber beams and reclaimed pine floorboards. 

Much of the garden is bounded by a wall rebuilt using reclaimed bricks and stone piers with climbing plants like wisteria and honeysuckle climbing the walls.

The current owners have constructed an oak pergola covered with reclaimed Kent peg tiles and traditional clay roof tiles.
