A Decorative Fireplace and Classic Touches in a 592 sq ft Stockholm Apartment
On the raised ground floor of an early 20th-century apartment building in the Södermalm area of Stockholm lies a beautiful apartment with period elements, a bedroom with built-in storage, and a cozy kitchen.
The 55 square meter apartment features high ceilings and huge windows, flooding the spaces with natural light. This helps to make the apartment feel bigger than its actual size.
The apartment was renovated in 2023, but period features have been preserved such as the beautiful decorative fireplace, stucco, and mirrored doors. Together with the modern furnishings, it creates a home with modern functionality and historic character.

During the renovation, the apartment’s wall and joinery were painted using Auro’s ecological and non-toxic paints, in the colors Sandstone and Light Patricia, creating a light atmopshere especially in combination with the sunlight flowing into the home through the large windows.

The living room is spacious and bright, and the high ceilings of 3.10 meters make it feel even more spacious. The huge window lets in beautiful natural light.

The wall paneling is not original to the house, but a later addition bought from Sekelskifte. It is painted in the Joanne shade from Little Greene.

The highlight of the living room is this beautiful original fireplace (a kakelugn) with pastel colored decorations.

On the wall next to the fireplace hangs a Candle Sconce “Solen” designed by Josef Frank.

The hall and living room feature a new herringbone parquet floor.

About Södermalm – Stockholm
Södermalm (or Söder in short) is an island just south of Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan). It has transformed from an impoverished area at the beginning of the 20th century into the most trendy neighborhood in Stockholm (and one of the coolest areas in the world, according to Vogue).
What to do: Södermalm is known for its cozy cafés, restaurants, and shops (including many vintage shops such as Beyond Retro and Grandpa). The island also offers beautiful views from the city. Walk up on Mariaberget or Skinnarviksberget and snap a picture of Sweden’s most beautiful city, or go for a swim at Långholmen.
Museums: Fotografiska Museum, Stockholm City Museum
You can take a guided 2-hour tour of Södermalm to fully immerse yourself in this trendy area. And if you’re interested in the brewery history, take a guided walk that includes a beer tasting at a secret location.
Where to stay: Stockholm Stadshotell, Hotel Frantz, NoFo Hotel

During the renovation, one large bedroom has been divided into two smaller rooms. The master bedroom features custom built-in wardrobes around the bed, with a smart shelf for storage.

The room is decorated with the Willow wallpaper designed by William Morris.

The room features the original wooden floorboards.

The newly created room features a window facing the master bedroom, ensuring the room receives some natural light. The room is now used as a combined music room and home office. This room used to be a nursery, when it was previously for sale.

The room is decorated with the Oak Tree Trails wallpaper by Ulricehamns Tapetfabrik.

The kitchen is a cozy space with the original wooden floor and a charming breakfast nook with a built-in bench and a small round table.

The light, gray-beige kitchen cabinets are paired with brass handles, a black granite worktop, white metro tiles, and integrated appliances.

Next to the breakfast nook, that also features wall paneling, a coffee corner has been fitted in the built-in cabinets with drawers and glass upper cupboards.

In the narrow hall with a new herringbone parquet floor, high bookshelves have been fitted along the walls.

The tiny bathroom is designed in a classic style with white tilework, a classic bathroom vanity, and the IKEA LOMMARYD mirror.

A vintage cabinet above the toilet adds more storage space.

The hall features the original built-in hat rack. The entry features new Victorian Floor tiles from Byggfabriken in the York pattern, followed by the newly laid herringbone parquet floor.
