A Fantastic Small Art Nouveau Apartment in Stockholm
This home is magnificent! This ground-floor apartment in an Art Nouveau building from 1908 has a size of only 41 square meters, but it has three-meter-high ceilings and a very effective layout with half-open partitions between the main rooms, creating a wonderful sense of space.
But that’s not all. The apartment has undergone a recent renovation, adding a new kitchen and bathroom. The interiors are cozy, filled with plants, and the occasional burst of color paired with muted gray walls. Period elements like wooden floorboards, deep window sills, wooden doors, and joinery have been preserved, adding even more character to the spaces.
Captured in one picture: original elements, large windows, the open layout with oak studs, and a cozy atmosphere created with plants, warm wooden elements, and color.
The kitchen is created using classic IKEA cabinets. The dark blue lower cabinets are paired with brass handles, an oak countertop, a blank sink and faucet, and beige backsplash tiles.
On one side, the fridge and oven are fitted inside a niche. There is also a half-open wall toward the hallway.
There are many plants in the apartment, and the green upper cabinets are decorated with a charming leaf pattern, which suits the decor nicely. I love that one upper cabinet has been left open, and on the left are small wooden shelves; it makes the kitchen feel less bulky in a relatively small space.
A built-in bench is created using the same cabinets as the kitchen. The smart bench has storage underneath and provides plenty of seating space by the small wooden tiled table.
Deep window sills are typical for these old Swedish apartments. They are perfect for plants or other decor.
The half-open layout with warm wooden rods reaching the ceiling creates an open feeling while still maintaining privacy. It also helps to let natural light from the two large windows flow nicely throughout the apartment.
A cozy sitting area has been created by the glass doors opening to the private terrace. A dark pink rug adds a warm color element to the gray-painted room.
The apartment used to be the gatekeeper’s residence, and its ground-floor location also means it has access to a private terrace in the communal courtyard. The terrace is a wonderful extension to the living area in the warmer months.
A cozy sleeping alcove lies next to the living room. Dark green blackout curtains can be drawn to create a private and dark sleeping nook.
The sleeping alcove is big enough for a double bed. A wide niche has been fitted with a wardrobe system, which is hidden from view, with the same dark green velvet curtains.
The entry hall opens into a second open space between the main rooms. This is now used as a perfect home office with a wooden desk and shelves.
A large mirror helps to reflect light coming from the large windows.
The small bathroom was also renovated in recent years. It is designed with white tiled walls and a reddish-brown tiled floor from Höganäs.
The entry hall is fitted with storage on two sides. A small niche has been fitted with smart hanging baskets for smaller items.
On the other side is a hanging rack for coats as well as simple wooden shelves used as a bench and shoe storage.
