IKEA MÄVINN: A Vibrant Handmade Home Décor Collection
Today, IKEA launched the second edition of the MÄVINN collection. With the MÄVINN collection, IKEA collaborates with social enterprises in Southeast Asia, celebrates local craftsmanship, and creates jobs and training for women and marginalized groups.
The IKEA MÄVINN collection features seventeen unique, handcrafted products that tell a heritage story and empower the artisans who created them. The first edition was hugely popular; I expect this collection to be the same.
Since 2012, IKEA has developed partnerships with social enterprises to design and produce products sold in IKEA stores worldwide. MÄVINN, whose first edition was launched in 2023, is developed in collaboration with five social enterprises and artisans from Bangladesh, India, and Jordan. The collection supports the companies’ work to create jobs for people in disadvantaged areas, allowing them to grow as skilled professionals and make a positive impact.
Much love and skill have gone into the making of the MÄVINN collection. Each basket, bag, rug, cushion cover, bedspread, bathrobe, plant pot hanger, throw, and pouch is woven, braided, or embroidered by hand. The collection is vibrant and fun, and it creates meaningful jobs.
Despite being handmade, the collection focuses on creating products that can be produced in larger volumes and sold globally, creating more jobs. All products are made from cotton or jute, which comes from social enterprises.
The IKEA designers created MÄVINN, inspired by traditional, buzzing crafts markets. Although every product in the collection has its own expression and handpicked feel, the colors and recurring patterns bring them together.
The handicraft shows in the slight variations that make each item unique—and in details like an embroidered four-leaf clover on a bathrobe or the handmade tassels on a throw. Since no product is exactly like another, it adds personality like no other.
“MÄVINN showcases craft techniques that have been passed down for generations, and it is fantastic to create together and learn from these craftsmen who keep the traditions alive. As a designer, I am proud to work on a project that helps women grow as skilled artisans and enables families and communities to achieve financial independence,” says Paulin Machado, designer at IKEA of Sweden.
The plant pot hanger is hand-made using the macrame technique, knotted, and braided by artisans in Ramesh Flowers in India.
It’s the teamwork that makes MÄVINN mighty. Every product results from a close collaboration between IKEA, the artisans, and the social businesses. It embodies the idea behind the collection: creating jobs and standout handcrafted items at a great price by utilizing everyone’s skills.
Jute is a hard-wearing, easy-to-grow fiber with natural variations and a silky shine. It makes a great material for baskets and rugs.
Each colorful dot on this bed runner or table runner is crocheted by hand before it’s stitched on.
The MÄVINN collection will be launched in two stages: the first half will be available online and in stores on September 4, and the second half will follow in December. More new IKEA collections can be found here.
