Muted Gray and Ochre Tones in a 1920s Swedish Apartment
On the top floor of a characteristic governor’s house in Gothenburg, this charming one-bedroom apartment combines original 1920s details with thoughtful modern updates.
Set in a gabled position and offering 57 square meters of living space, the apartment has a bright and welcoming atmosphere, with large windows and a well-planned layout that makes the most of every available space.

The building’s 1920s classicist character is reflected throughout the home. Continuous wooden floors, traditional mirrored doors, and decorative moldings have been preserved, adding warmth and period charm to the otherwise modern interiors.

The walls and floors have been renovated in recent years, adding a muted gray tone to the interiors, while the wooden floors add a natural element.

In the living room, the gray walls and wooden floors are paired with layered textiles. A white sofa takes center stage, set upon an ochre-toned rug, while floor-to-ceiling curtains along one wall hide the French balcony.

Earth tones in the cushions and art add more warmth to the space.

On the other side of the room, a large dining table with chairs and a bench allows plenty of seating space for dinner parties with friends and family.

With windows in two directions, the room is wonderfully light despite the darker gray hue on the walls.

The living room and the bedroom are connected by beautiful sliding doors, a practical feature as it saves space, but it also enhances the historic feel of the home.

The muted gray color scheme continues in the bedroom, where String shelving adds storage space and layered textiles add warmth.

A former door has been preserved in the wall and painted in the same color as the walls.

The kitchen is pretty spacious for an apartment of this size. Light gray cabinets with brass fittings are paired with a light stone counter and white backsplash tiles.

IKEA IVAR cabinets line the other wall, topped with wooden shelves that provide more storage space for glassware.

The hall is painted in a warm ochre tone, matching the textiles and art in the living room.

The spacious hall is fitted with a built-in wardrobe, and there is plenty of space for more storage furniture.

The apartment is listed for sale at Stadshem – photography by Maria Sahlander.
