A Beautifully Preserved Historic Country House in Sweden
This beautiful preserved farmhouse is located in a former mining area west of Stockholm. While the farm dates back to the 17th century, this house was built in the 1880s, and in recent years, it has been extended on one side to accommodate a modern kitchen and bathroom to ensure the main house was kept as original as possible.
The current owners have owned the house since the 80s, and while living here, they chose to preserve as many original elements as possible and be very cautious of renovation. The house has its traditional Swedish “Falu Rödfärg” exterior, and all doors, locks, and handles are original.
This home is wonderfully preserved, and the new extension blends seamlessly with the original architecture. Inside, there are six working fireplaces, historic wallpapers, and tongue-and-groove paneling, creating a cozy and historic ambiance.

A lilac-embedded veranda with figured joinery provides a lovely welcome to the house. Double ochre-yellow doors lead to the spacious hallway.

I am starting the home tour in the new extension that was added to the house in 2021. This extension houses a kitchen, a bathroom, and a utility room. It was built with as many natural materials as possible, enlisting specialized craftsmen to carry out the work.

The kitchen may be new, but the style and color scheme suit the historic house beautifully. The solid wood cabinets are painted in a forest green linseed oil and topped with a countertop painted in egg oil tempera with a waxed surface.

The tongue-and-groove paneling on the walls and ceiling follow the design style of the older part of the house.

The dining room is located in the old part of the house, and this used to be the kitchen.

The old kitchen stove has been preserved.

From the former kitchen, you move into a more formal dining room with striped wallpaper and antique furniture.

The old part of the house has a cozy living room with floral wallpaper and an original fireplace in the corner.

The bathroom is located in the new addition. Four windows look out over the garden and offer a lovely view when you’re soaking in the freestanding bath.

The bathroom is designed in a classical style, suiting the historic ambiance of the house. Classical fittings have been used, and the green tones from the kitchen continue into the bathroom with the green-hued floor tiles.

On the top floor are four bedrooms, two of which have cast iron rock fireplaces. This bedroom is a romantic room with floral wallpaper and two clever corner wardrobes.

The largest room has large windows in three directions and an original fireplace. This room can also be used as a second sitting room.

The garden and the surrounding nature form a green unit around the farm buildings, and large jasmine and lilac bushes grow here. Next to the main building stands a nursing tree, an ash, which is approximately 200–250 years old.
