A Rich Color Palette and Reclaimed Materials in a South Kensington Mews House

Tucked away on a historic cobbled mews in South Kensington, this early-20th-century house blends period character, carefully chosen materials, modern comforts, and a rich color palette.

Spanning more than 2,300 square feet and arranged over four stories, the home offers three bedrooms, plus an office, cinema room, gym, and open-plan living spaces.

The current owners worked with Patrick Williams of Berdoulat and decorative artist Tess Newall to renovate the unique mews home with remarkable attention to detail.

Reclaimed materials, bespoke joinery, and richly layered colors lend the interiors a sense of history, while integrated lighting, automated blinds, and modern security provide contemporary convenience.

From the central hall, a sliding door painted in Farrow & Ball’s “Berdoulat Green” opens into the spacious open-plan kitchen and living room. The same green tone is also used on the window and door frames, creating a cohesive look.

The kitchen is arranged along one side of the room, with white-painted cabinetry topped with Carrara marble worktops and brushed-gold handles.

The sitting area is located on the other side of the room. The entire space features reclaimed floorboards sourced from an old mill in Bristol. The walls are finished in waxed Venetian plaster. Its subtly tarnished appearance gives the interiors a gently aged character.

Queen’s Gate Mews was developed during the mid-to-late 19th century, following the Great Exhibition of 1851. Like many of London’s traditional mews, it was originally created to house stables, coaches, and ancillary accommodation serving the grand Victorian residences of Queen’s Gate and the surrounding streets.

This house stands quietly at the end of the mews. Its traditional London-brick facade is punctuated by sash windows, restrained stucco detailing, and a rich umber-colored front door. Above, a mansard roof with dormer windows completes the exterior.
