A Restored and Extended London Townhouse
On a picturesque and no-through road in the Clapton area of London, you can find a beautiful restored and extended townhouse. The owners had always loved this house because of the corner position and the ability to develop it into a grand townhouse. When they were able to buy the house, they undertook a meticulous restoration where they added two floors to the house, turning it into a five-story townhouse.
During the renovation, they dug a full-footprint basement to house a wine store, playroom, and utility room. The ground floor was opened up to create a new modern kitchen extension, and a new floor was added on the top floor.
The owners love the Georgian era, and this is visible in the design; the house is adorned with Calke Abbey coving and ceiling roses from Stevensons of Norwich, and the walls are finished in rich Edward Bulmer tones. Tongue-and-groove paneling, aged plank floorboards, four-panel internal doors, deep skirting boards, and architraves were also added to the house.
A cozy sitting room is located at the front of the house and features a bay window and a fireplace flanked by bookshelves.
The ground floor is divided by glazed doors that are painted in a warm, rusty red. These glass doors can be opened up to create one big living space, allowing you to look from the front of the house to the back.

The large hallway connects the historic part of the house with the new addition. The room is lined with bookshelves on either side of a fireplace with a stone hearth and a reclaimed fire surround.
The extension at the back of the house is home to a grand and light kitchen and dining space. The modern kitchen cabinets are painted in ‘Berdoulat Green’ and topped with a marble worktop.
Tongue-and-groove paneling serves as the kitchen backsplash.
A large purple kitchen island provides plenty of workspace and serves as a breakfast table.
The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom. Wooden floorboards have been laid across the entire space to connect the two rooms.
The master bathroom is a serene space with walls painted ‘Lilac Pink,’ a fireplace, and a freestanding bath in front of the window. An antique vanity and art on the walls add a historic touch to the room.
In total, the house features six bedrooms and three bathrooms.
The garden, centered around a greenhouse, is designed by Emily Ffrench Blake and Will Carr.
The front door is painted in Invisible Green by Little Greene.
