A Modern English Home with a Sculptural Facade
The Nordroom focuses mainly on the interiors of a home, but the exterior of this modern English house is also spectacular. The four-bedroom house located within Broadstairs’ coveted North Foreland Estate also has a view of one of the best beaches on the Kent coast.
The house is the first residential project of Giles Miller Studio, the modern house with floor-to-ceiling windows is surrounded by mature trees, so it feels very private. An innovative façade in tessellating geometric swirls softens the angular lines of the house’s form. A 360-degree circulation on the ground floor combines with the houses’ position in the center of its plot to establish luscious sightlines of its leafy backdrop from its copious windows.Â
The house is located in a forested area and has a big driveway where many cars can park. It is built on stilts with concrete foundations. The house has two rectangular parts stacked on top of each other.
The design is simple but the outside of the house is decorated with unique sculptures. These sculptures form a spiral structure that acts as a support for climbing plants. This makes the house blend in with the trees, creating a softer appearance.
On the ground floor, the living spaces are built around a central block that houses the staircase, toilet, and built in cabinets. This way, every living space has a connection to the outdoors thanks to the large floor to ceiling windows.
The ground floor has a warm and shiny concrete floor that connects all the rooms together. This gives the house a modern and industrial touch, along with the strong wooden beams and walls made of cross-laminated timber that it stands next to.
The ground floor has a second seating area that can be partitioned by heavy curtains to soundproof the TV and to create private guest bedroom.
The kitchen, created by Object Atelier, is meticulously designed. It features custom-made cabinets made of birch plywood with Caesar stone countertops. The kitchen is illuminated by eco-friendly Tala lighting, and equipped with Miele appliances. There is a spacious kitchen island that acts as a gathering spot for socializing.
A bespoke bent steel staircase in the central core of the house takes you to the first floor with four bedrooms that each has its en suite bathroom.
In two of the bedrooms, clever joinery slides across to reveal and conceal an in-room bathtub and separate shower room.
The design of the house was greatly influenced by the beautiful forest surroundings. The half-acre plot is surrounded by lovely mature trees like pines and silver birches. The garden is situated in the middle of the plot and wraps around the house, with large windows providing views of the greenery.
At the back of the house, there is a spacious lawn that extends outward. On one side, there is a private decked area where people can gather for outdoor dining and socializing. Hidden among the trees on the other side of the house, there is a sauna and an ice bath.
As time passes, the house will gradually blend in with its surroundings. The house has cleverly designed planters integrated into its exterior. Climbing plants like jasmine, clematis, and wisteria are already spreading across this framework.
On the upper floor, there is a spacious deck that extends along the back of the house. It receives sunlight throughout the day and offers partial views of the sea through the trees.
