A Carefully Restored 17th Century English Cottage

In the market town of Lewes in East Sussex stands this beautiful 17th century cottage. The cottage has been carefully restored, making sure all the original historical elements have been preserved.

The cottage was built in 1640 in a combination of architecture styles. A timber frame sits atop a brick foundation with stones taken from the ruins of Lewes Monastery after King Henry VIII’s 1530s dissolution of the monasteries.

The cottage is divided over four floors. When you enter the cottage you immediately find yourself in the ground floor living room. The living room has untreated pitch pine floorboards and rustic beams decorate the ceiling and walls.

The washed walls give the cottage a serene look. In the living room it has been painted in a natural shade by Atelier Ellis.

A concrete floor lies in the kitchen and dining room. Creating a harmonious look for these two rooms.

The kitchen is simple, with a wooden countertop, concrete floors and built-in shelves. A sky window brings natural light to this room.

A second living room/snug is painted in a moody color tone (Plume by Atelier Ellis). A Victorian fireplace and wooden floor add character to the room.

The copper bath tub is a true centerpiece in the bathroom. The bathroom has windows in two directions, showing a lovely view over the garden.
