An Eclectic Elegant Home in Vancouver
Located close to Kits Beach in Vancouver stands this eclectic elegant home. The Kitsilano neighborhood is a charming region with heritage craftsman homes and one of these homes has been redesigned by Gillian Segal Design.
The house has lots of character and charm with heritage-style wood inlay floors, stained glass, and old beat-up brass door hardware. While most of these features are preserved, Gillian also wanted to add new life to the house, with new features that are complementary to the craftsmen home and character of the neighborhood.
The 3 story house of 3000 square feet has an open-plan ground floor. Where the living room, dining room, and kitchen all seamlessly connect divided by characteristic arches.
The neutral color palette is a nod to the hues found in the beaches of the Pacific Northwest. The palette is warm, sophisticated and textural and vibrant color pops are added through the artwork.
The natural color palette is combined with natural materials in the furnishings. Thoughout the house you will find natural stones (mainly marble) and oak in several finishes.
The original oak floor is stripped and re-stained for a more modern look. The original stained glass windows are also replaced by newly designed stained glass windows for a more modern look.
The dining room was surrounded by large craftsman-style pillars, interior windows and a dropped coffered ceiling. And even though these features fit with the architecture of the house, it also felt clunky and heavy.
Gillian proposed to remove these features and instead add these arches for a lighter open-plan look.
The sculptural pendant in the dining room by PELLE is made of brass with cast paper flowers.
The kitchen is light and peaceful but has interesting details such as this cast metal post running through the island.
The light bedroom has a bay window with a built-in window seat with underneath storage.
The master bathroom has a medicine cabinet custome made by Gillian Segal. The artwork is by Barbara Cole.
The master bedroom is decorated in blue Kelly Wearstler “Jubilee” wallpaper. The blue velvet chair is by Cassina and the reading lamp by Kelly Wearstler.
