Bespoke Elements and a Green deVOL Kitchen in an Edwardian Mansion Apartment

Three years ago, deVOL Kitchens shared the most beautiful kitchen project with me (and my readers). The kitchen featured an all-green color palette, quality materials, and an attached dining room drenched in pink.

Today, I can share the rest of the manor apartment with you, and it’s not surprising that the beautiful design continues in the other rooms as well, combining Edwardian character with contemporary interiors and bold color accents.

The apartment occupies the first floor of a handsome early-20th-century building in Barnes, with river views, a private balcony, and direct access from the communal gardens to the Thames towpath.

The layout has been carefully reorganized to suit modern life, with the south-facing side of the apartment dedicated to generous living and entertaining spaces.

The bedrooms are positioned separately at the rear, where views across the gardens and towards the river create a quieter atmosphere.

Solid oak floorboards extend from the hallway into the main living room, where restored plaster moldings and an Italian Arabescato marble mantelpiece bring a sense of grandeur, paired with a more playful approach in the furniture, such as this panther-print sofa.

Large sasg windows allow natural light to fill the room while preserved the traditional proportions of the original apartment.

On one side, the fireplace is flanked by built-in cabinetry in a classic style, while glazing lets natural light flow into the attached hallway.

The entry hall features the classical high ceilings and decorative wall paneling paired with practical additions, including a concealed coat and utility storage and a bespoke oak wine fridge made by Barr Joinery.

As mentioned, the kitchen was designed with cabinetry by deVOL. Sage-green cupboards are paired with richly veined Arabescato marble worktops and a carved marble sink, while striking checkerboard tiles run underfoot.

A Lacanche range cooker forms the centerpiece of the room, complemented by brass fixtures, a boiling-water tap, and a practical fold-out pot filler positioned above the range.

Ornate dentil cornicing follows the ceiling and antiques decorate the shelves, reinforcing the apartment’s Edwardian character.

The kitchen flows directly into the dining area, featuring an antique dining table paired with a velvet green sofa. Bespoke cabinetry with copper details has been fitted in the alcoves flanking the marble fireplace.

At the rear of the apartment are two spacious bedrooms, both decorated in soft, restful colors and illuminated by gentle northerly light. Each room has leafy views of the communal gardens and an en-suite bathroom.

The master bedroom features elegant floor-to-ceiling wardrobes crafted from tulipwood and oak, painted in a muted green shade.

The master bedroom’s en-suite garden is a calm retreat with diamond-shaped floor tiles, brass fittings, and a walk-in shower.

In the second bedroom, the pink-and-green color palette of the kitchen and dining room returns, with dusty pink walls, green joinery, and a wallpapered ceiling.

The room also features built-in wardrobes and a fireplace with beautiful tiles.

The second bathroom features a bolder palette of burgundy red, marble, brass, and green tiles. The lion-shaped tap is from Francone Bespoke Taps.

Beyond the apartment, beautifully maintained communal gardens stretch towards the Thames. Mature trees, clipped hedges and established planting create a secluded green space where residents can sit, read or enjoy the changing seasons.

From here, a gate provides direct access to the river towpath, placing peaceful waterside walks just beyond the garden.

Riverview Gardens was built in phases and designed by Edwardian architect Delissa Joseph. Today, the mansion block forms an important part of the Castelnau Conservation Area, retaining its handsome period facades and landscaped riverside setting.

The peaceful atmosphere of Barnes was celebrated in a 1919 London Underground poster encouraging city residents to travel west for a quieter day beside the river. It featured the lines, “Where peaceful rivers soft and slow / Amid the verdant landscape flow,” taken from Joseph Addison’s hymn The Lord My Pasture Shall Prepare.
