IKEA and the Finnish design house Marimekko have teamed up for a limited collection called BASTUA. The BASTUA collection is an ode to the Finnish sauna culture.
The limited collection combines the styles of the Swedish furniture store and Marimekko. This means you will find Scandinavian design pieces that you’re used to from IKEA with outspoken designs, prints, and colors from Marimekko.
The inspiration for the prints in the BASTUA collection comes from the plant that often grows around sauna buildings in Finland: rhubarb. The plant’s bright colors and whimsical shape form the base for the prints on the textiles and the accessories in the new IKEA x Marimekko collection.
The light wood furniture and clear, embossed glassware from the BASTUA collection contrast beautifully with the vibrant prints. No wonder the motto of this collection is: live boldly, joyfully, and well.
The IKEA and Marimekko BASTUA Collection will be in stores in March.
“This pattern for the BASTUA collection is inspired by the large, decorative rhubarb leaves that sometimes grow next to sauna buildings in Finland. The wide, green leaves are a sight to remember and the pink stem is a juicy, crunchy treat” – Maija Louekari, designer Marimekko
The BASTUA sauna towels are made of a flexible fabric, so you can also use them in the kitchen. The blue-green print resembled the pattern seen in the woodwork of traditional sauna cabins in Finland. The heavy bath towels and trays have the same teal print.
The wooden side table has a minimalist look and is therefore a harmonious addition to the other products with brighter use of colors. For example, the shower curtain with rhubarb leaves is a real eye-catcher that you can also match with a matching bathrobe.
The bench towels feature a pattern inspired by the soft, curved cuts of log walls in traditional sauna cabins. They come in two sizes: they’re wonderful to use in the sauna, but they can also be used as a table runner or tea towels.
Moment for Yourself
The water jug and drinking glasses have a texture inspired by rippling water. When light falls through the glassware, the glasses sparkle on the colorful trays. Serve your favorite drink and relax on the minimalist, wooden bench that fits into any interior. And if you rather sit outside, then you can take the large, red cushions with a rhubarb leaf print and enjoy a moment to yourself on the grass.
“With a Scandinavian summer evening by a crystal clear lake in mind, I created the BASTUA glass. Light refracts in the irregular facet pattern, just like on a diamond, and turns the glass into a little jewel on your dining table.” – Henrik Preutz, designer IKEA
The soft light of the rice paper lantern creates a serene atmosphere at dusk. Light the candle with the scent of elderflower, rhubarb, and sweet vanilla tones to relax completely. After the relaxing moment, hang your bathrobe and towel on the wooden coat rack. The pattern on the coat rack can also be seen in the glasswork of the collection.
Add a dreamy glow to your indoor space with the BASTUA LED lantern. The combination of light birch, rice paper, and its soft, diffused light creates a minimalistic, serene atmosphere to get your relaxation ritual started.
Wind down and close the day with a lovely scented candle with elderflower, rhubarb, and sweet vanilla tones – evoking warm, relaxing summer days. The artisanal carved wood design of the glass is prominent throughout the collection as seen in the bowls, jug, and coat rack.
