Light and Modern Spaces in a Small Victorian House
Located on a beautiful street within Forest Gate’s Woodgrange Conservation Area, this charming two-bedroom Victorian home dates back to 1890 and has been thoughtfully renovated by its architect owners.
The recent refurbishment utilized locally sourced and reclaimed materials, honoring the house’s heritage. Nestled between a front garden and a rear garden featuring a separate timber-clad studio, the house is enveloped in lush greenery, accentuated by its close proximity to Wanstead Flats.
The current owners and directors of the architectural firm Astrain Scheldt undertook this renovation project. Their goal was to design light-filled, harmonious, and modern living spaces that complement the house’s historic character.
The house is only 602 sq ft / 55 square meters big so the owners created an open floor plan with windows on both sides to make it feel as spacious as possible. The white painted floorboards and white walls enhance this spacious feeling.
A floor-to-ceiling curtain is added between the sitting room and the rest of the ground floor to create a cozy sitting area when needed.
The white sitting room is decorated around an original Victorian fireplace with a Carrara marble surround.
The dining area in the center of the ground floor features original diamond black and white tiles. Clever storage cabinets are added on both sides, with a bookcase that has openings on two sides and open and closed storage space under the stairs.
The bright kitchen is designed with mint green lower cabinets and birch ply upper cabinets. The cupboards are paired with a quartz worktop and brass fittings. Double glass doors open up to the back garden with it home office/shed.
On the first floor are two bedrooms. The master bedroom features an original fireplace, with a Carrara surround, flanked by wardrobes with cane doors. The walls are painted in a light gray shade, creating a calm atmosphere.
The second bedroom is home to a nursery with floor to ceiling wardrobes under the slanted ceiling.
The small bathroom features green geometric encaustic tiles by Bert and May and mirrored cabinets.
The timber-clad studio at the end of the garden with birch ply-lined walls and a built-in desk is a perfect private home office.
A black and white checkerboard path with tiles from London Mosaic leads you to the front door.
The house is listed at The Modern House for £635,000.
